Women in the City
public art on over 50 locations in Los Angeles, 9 Feb through March 2008

This is the first public initiative organized by Emi Fontana, West of Rome curator/gallerist, featuring 10 works by 4 internationally recognized artists of the feminist movement in contemporary art Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, and Cindy Sherman. Events, locations, dates at www.womeninthecity.org

Women in the City's central themes are traditional methods of advertising and promotion. Find out how Barbara Kruger deconstructs stereotypes of consumerism; how Jenny Holzer manipulates the language of popular culture and brings texts (in English and for the first time in US her famous Survival Series in Spanish) to stickers, posters, such as "The beginning of the war will be secret": Birdcalls by Louise Lawler uses the phonetic pronunciation of the names of male artists as sounds that mimic the cry of birds; post-feminist icon Cindy Sherman - it's her first public project - presents herself like on this photo as a nameless Hollywood starlet. Check out the new relationship between the art, the audience and the city - and get a new perspective on how women are living and especially working today!
