Digital realities, urban food culture, protest and design are themes at Vienna Design Week (28 Sept - 7 Oct)

Today, the Vienna Design Week organizers under the direction of Lilli Hollein invited to the press conference concerning the main themes of the 12th edition of the festival at the annually changing headquarters at this year's focus region Neubau (7th district of Vienna) at the area of the former hospital Sophienspital (Apollogasse 19) which is currently used as service destination for homeless people. Future hospitality, urban food production and urban nutrition are also topics of the open call 'departure Challenge: Urban Food & Design' where projects can be submitted until 25 May; selected projects will be co-funded and presented at Vienna Design Week (details about the open call).

Virtual and augmented realities will be other core themes at the upcoming festival. Wien Tourismus (Vienna Tourism Board) or AWS (Austria Wirtschaftsservice) belong to the programme partners of digital reality activities.

Until 8 June, aspiring programme partners (companies, design studios, museums, institutions, galleries,...) can submit their ideas (workshop, installation, pop-up store,...) for the 10-day festival (details). There is no restriction in which field of design the presentation has to be; it's open in general to contemporary design - from lifestyle products to architecture, social to graphic design.

'Graphic design' is one of the special formats of Vienna Design Week. This year, it pays homage to 'protest'. It's announced that graphic designers will create on occasion of the festival posters expressing their personal protest topic. Design products as tools for protest will be explored under the aspect gender, environment, politics and technology by a panel headed by the director of Vienna Design Week Lilli Hollein.

Art Director Christof Nardin (Bueronardin) selected the signal color as reference to protest culture; the graphics are inspired by 60ies pop art.
