You are what you wear. This seems particularly true when looking back at the fashions of the 19th century, a time when Europe’s princely courts were still the centre of power and therefore also the centre of fashion and taste. From the middle of the 18th century onwards, European princes began to regulate the clothes worn by members of the military, by public servants and other court officials, e.g. to make them wear uniform clothes.
