spring/summer 2009

Trend Collections, Online Courses, New Magazine ...

The Academy of Art University San Francisco presented trendy graduate collections (for the first time even from online students!) and a new magazine during the New York Fashion Week.

Womenswear designer Johanna Hatzenbuehler is one of 15 recent graduates of the Academy of Art University School of Fashion, San Francisco, who have presented their spring/summer 2009 collections in the areas womenswear, menswear, accessory, knitwear, textile design during the New York Fashion Week at The Tent in Bryant Park on 5th September 2008.

Johanna Hatzenbuehler is born in Germany and grew up in Germany and US (Texas). The collection is made of recycled fabrics inspired by the Iguacu waterfalls in South America. She has integrated the fluid lines and sparkling of falling water. Her mix of volume and transparency made of layering is one of the key trends for spring/summer 2009.

Online Courses

For the first time, two graduates of the University (Ali Khan/menswear, Elena Akoulova/womenswear) who have completed their degrees 100% online presented their collections in New York.

Elena Akoulova, born in Ulan Ude, Russia, completed her degree online at the San Francisco University while staying in Marietta, Georgia. She plans to got into production with her line in the US. Catwalk TV

Ali Khan completed his study online while in Pakistan. He plans to expand his label internationally. The humorous slogan of the menswear collection with artful textured fabrics and details is 'Caution: For External Use Only'. Unfortunately, Ali got no visa to attend the show. His collection was styled together for the show with the pieces by Sook-yeong Kwon (fashion and textile design) who was inspired by young culture and music; you will find out the product is a mix of classic menswear and sportive leisure wear: Catwalk TV

The Academy of Art University in San Francisco (founded 1929) offers the online program since 2002. Today, 116 online fashion courses in Fashion Design, Fashion Journalism, Fashion Illustration and Fashion Merchandising can be attended

The magazine 'one eighty'

The students celebrated another premiere: the 106 page full-color magazine 'one eighty' produced by the students in the Fashion Journalism program with articles about fashion, art, photography and lifestyle in San Francisco, across the US and internationally was launched in September 2008. The next edition will come out on occasion of the next show in 2009.

One of the stories in the first issue, edited by Ashley Johnson (BFA Fashion Journalism), photographed by Justin Nambiar (BFA Photography), is entitled 'Leader of the Pack', presents graduate Jesse Wardlow’s collection of preppy cardigans and daydresses. The designer was inspired by a scooter gang from San Francisco riding to Mexico. The amusing photo story in the magazine plays with the bad taste of the 80ies: the vintage scooters are from the types which have never been fashionable and were driven in the late 70ies, 80ies by the ones who seemed to care less about fashion! Check it out; the website will be launched in 2009. Preview on
