"Have
faith in the old to create the new."

La
Hong still has very close ties with his homeland of Vietnam.
It is impossible to divorce the Asian influence from the life, thoughts
and actions of this designer, who now lives in Europe,
in the capital of Austria, in Vienna. La Hong is convinced that anyone
who wants to create something new from the old must know himself, and
his roots, very well. To La Hong, the new can only emerge where the old
is honoured. It is in this area of conflict between the traditional
and modern that La Hong’s designs are born. Transposed into clothing, this philosophy is reflected not only in the Chinese symbols on the clothes, expressing the sayings of Confucius, but also extremely pragmatically in fabric and form. The fabrics are mainly layers of single colour raw silk, and silk chiffon decorated with almost pop art batik designs, echoing traditional Vietnamese costume. The showstopper is that these dresses, worked in the style of haute couture (all hand sewn) are reversible. The customary lining becomes a second dress. Often these “interfacings”, worthy of display, take centre stage in the form of cascade-like sculptures, as if drawing attention to the fact that this dress leads a double life. La Hong: Born 1967 in Saigon, Vietnam. In 1981 La Hong Nhut immigrated to Europe, Austria with his family. After leaving school and then studying technical drawing, he followed his heart and began to study drawing and fashion design. After successfully completing the course at Vienna’s oldest school of fashion in the Spengergasse, he spent time gaining experience in Vienna and also began to create fashion garments to his own designs. The competition: Applications are invited internationally, in 4 languages. More than 50,000 visitors from around the world visited the designer exhibition at www.fashion.at/pierre-lang. Almost 4,000 votes were registered. Fashion designers from France, Italy, Spain, Finland, USA, UK, Japan, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Lithuania, Vietnam, China, India, the Philippines, Slovenia and Ghana took part in the competition. 42 pieces of exclusive designer jewellery were awarded to visitors.
