Brazil-born Rafael Gomes is the winner of the
Triumph Fashion Award 2005

Rafael Gomes' South American joie de vivre, sensuality and refreshing new style have convinced 11,000 fashionistas and 19 fashion experts from Europe, USA, Asia and New Zealand.

700 sketches of designers from 40 countries were submitted to this year’s Triumph International Fashion Award on the theme “Dress up the Pin-up for a glamorous party”. The Triumph International Fashion Award 2005 is equipped with prizes and international presentations in the value of about 100,000 Euros again this year.

Rafael Gomes’ breathtaking evening dresses represent the glamorous wedding of seductive lingerie with Haute Couture. The skirt part consists of interwoven stockings or bra straps. Rafael Gomes places the corsages and bras of Triumph International in the centre of his creations.

Rafael Gomes: "I was born during the carnival in Rio de Janeiro. I already discovered my passion for fashion as a child when I sewed clothes for my play mobile figures. For 10 years I have lived in Munich. I am attending the German Master School for Fashion which I will end in summer 2006. I participated in the annual fashion show "Somewear" at which my first collection ranked first as well as with different further unusual projects: for example a dress made of car parts which went for “Alfa Romeo” to the presentation of a new car to tour through Germany. For a paper mill I created lavish paper clothes which were exhibited also during the Fashion Week in London. At a competition of the building firm “Hochtief” I won the first place with a collection of working clothes." Portrait photo Rafael Gomes>>>

Rafael Gomes' style can be best described by the term "Re-struct". Gomes uses for his fashion materials from underwear. Bra-straps and stockings are re-constructed to a seductive dress which is symbiotically connected with the lingerie. Gomes makes the principle of sustainability fashionable.“ Dr. Karin Sawetz, fashionoffice.org

Rafael Gomes describes his inspiration for the Pin-up as follows: "This year's motto for the Fashion Award immediately fascinated me. I sat there for hours and tried to design clothes which granted looks at the Triumph lingerie. Discontent met me. I was sorry to cover the parts to which I wanted to give effect. Basta! I disengaged from the idea underwear belongs to be covered. This was the idea! The Pin-up of today carries the “under” as part of “outer” wear. The self-confidence of women has changed! In Triumph lingerie the Pin-up completely secures her glamorous appearance! The materials are so various, of highly quality and feminine that they will perfectly fit for the Oscar’s Night." In a first phase more than 11,000 single votes for the “3 Finalists” were registered in a public online voting: Susanne Zaspel from Germany, Fiorenza from Italy, and Brazil-born Rafael Gomes.

Susanne Zaspel, born in Chemnitz, Germany, has studied at the University for Art and Design at Burg Giebichenstein/Halle. Her master thesis had the title "The Animal in Me". She works for her own label "HUNTING HIGH" as an independent fashion designer and illustrator in New York, Paris and Amsterdam.

“I love to observe people. Everything is an inspiration for me: the hectic time all over a town, people pass, glances by going, fondling a velvet cat fur, a night of dance or a night of love. With all of these modules I’m playing and compile them in a completely new way. I invent sensually images which I would like to donate back. As a cosmopolitan I know about the importance of the balance between expression and self protection. I like to combine that. My fashion experience should give space for one’s self, for the sexy super-heroine or the cat, which just want to hear her own purring.” Susanne Zaspel: Portrait photo>>> Biography>>>

Fiorenza is the designer label of the sisters Patrizia and Samanta Fiorenza. Both have studied at the Central St. Martins School in London and have their own studio in Venice now; Samanta designs jewellery, Patrizia creates fashion. Fiorenza’s fashion concepts for the Triumph Award connect the worlds of jewellery and fashion in a surprising and organic way.

After the hectic week of the Venice Film Festival we are currently working on the new shapes and designs for winter, taking our inspiration from the Venice Art Biennale, a mixture of sculptural and fluid cutting is a constant undercurrent of our style.” Patrizia und Samanta Fiorenza: Portrait photo>>> Biography>>

The jury of experts for the Triumph International Fashion Award 2005:

"I want to mention four of the 19 jury members: fashion theorist Prof. Dr. Ingrid Loschek is one of the most important fashion and costume scientists in Europe, Mary Jo Diehl from New York is one of the rare fashion designers who presents her work in art galleries and museums of modern art, Kunie Usuki from Tokyo has established Japan's most successful fashion and art festival Design Festa, and Jack Yan, founder of Lucire, one of the highest ranking fashion magazines on the internet, is one of the most influential online fashion pioneers," says Dr. Karin Sawetz of fashionoffice.org.

"It was a pleasure to serve on the Triumph International jury again," says Lucire founding publisher Jack Yan. "I remember being part of this for some years when Lucire was web-only. I am delighted to say that the quality of entries has been the highest this year."

Triumph International www.triumph.at: The story of Triumph International dates back well over a century and its history parallels developments in the world of fashion. Founded in Germany in 1886 by the Spiesshofer and Braun families, who still manage the business today, the company grew from small beginnings to Europe’s largest lingerie manufacturer and a leading garment maker throughout the world. Production began in a barn in Heubach, Germany, with just 2000 Goldmarks and six employees. Today the company has a turnover of 1.6 billion US-$ and a workforce approaching 37,000. In 1886 the founders declared their dedication to innovation, a philosophy that remains the same to this day and in 1902 'Triumph' was officially registered as their trademark. Soon the company had independent subsidiaries for swimwear, daywear and nightwear and new technological developments such as moulding and high frequency welding, used instead of traditional stitching, were revolutionising looks and possibilities for Triumph designers. On a global scale, Triumph International is represented in almost every country in the world and the company produces and markets foundation garments, lingerie and nightwear, swimwear and beachwear, sportswear and leisurewear. Triumph International attributes its success as a worldwide active manufacturer to its strong brands: Triumph, Sloggi, Bee Dees, Valisere and HOM.
