Salzburger Trachtenoutlet released dirndl trends for the Oktoberfest 'Kaiserwiesn' in Vienna

Recently, hair product brand Wella Professionals released some tips for hairstyles inspired by authentic looks and styled to be worn with traditional Austrian clothing for the upcoming Oktoberfest 'Kaiserwiesn' from 21 September to 8 October 2023 in Vienna (article).

To give Oktoberfest visitors an idea of what to wear at the upcoming Kaiserwiesn, Sascha Golitschek, managing director of the 'Salzburger Trachtenoutlet' and an expert on traditional clothing, summarized the 2023 trends in terms of overall look, the length of the dirndl hem, materials and colors of the three-piece dress (the main dress with corsage or narrow top and wide skirt is worn with a blouse and apron).

In 2023, dirndl trends for the Oktoberfest include a shift toward simplicity and classic styles, according to the trachten specialist. Traditional costumes will opt for a more subtle look. In terms of length, midi dirndls are preferred, while short dirndls are less popular. For the blouse, high-necked tops with lace and long sleeves worn under the sleeveless corsage-like part in white, cream and dark tones are in fashion. The main part of the dirndl dress (sleeveless top and wide skirt) is emphasized on noble colors like pine, navy and pink. It's trendy to match the apron in the same color as the dirndl. Sascha Golitschek points out that designers are increasingly turning to high-quality fabrics such as velvet and jacquard.

In addition to the trends for the Kaiserwiesn Oktoberfest, the Salzburger trachten specialist provided information on the meaning of the positioning of the dirndl bow: Tying it on the right side means being in love, engaged or married (the same side where the wedding ring is usually worn in Austria); on the left side suggests being single and basically available or not interested in communication through the apron dress code; in the middle means that the wearer's relationship status is "none of your business!"; tied at the back means being a waitress, child or widow, but with exceptions. The dirndl guide at kaiserwiesn.at/der-dirndlschleifen-ratgeber-2/ cites the Salzkammergut region as an example, where the apron is traditionally tied at the back.

The trend review is rounded off with tips for men, especially regarding the vest, which is recommended to be worn with lederhosen in a matching fabric - velvet is mentioned - and color of the partner's dirndl for the Oktoberfest companion outfit.
