Vienna Insight: X-Mas Warm Up at the Österreichische Werkstätten with a glimpse into a new fabric design project

Fashion.at was invited by the legendary Österreichische Werkstätten to the X-Mas Warm up in the company's store at Kärntner Straße 6 in Vienna's 1st district. The company Österreichische Werkstätten was founded in 1948 by the designer, architect and co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätten Josef Hoffmann together with partners representing Austrian arts and crafts. The tradition of selling design products of lasting, if not increasing, value similar to works of art continues to this day, with new designs in the spirit of Viennese Modernism in addition to original designs by Wiener Werkstätte designers such as Ugo Zovetti, whose creations were selected from the archives and with the permission of the MAK Museum of Applied Arts Vienna. The store also offers design products by the heirs of the 20th century Arts & Crafts movement, representing the contemporary Viennese style through design. Among them are the bag label Sagan with the shoulder bag 'Vienna' with integrated 'Viennese weave', which is known from the Thonet chairs of the Viennese coffeehouses, or the Austrian Fashion Award winning company (article) Mühlbauer with headwear like the woolen hat 'Schladming', named after a town in Styria known for mountaineering and winter sports. Both items, by the way, are currently in the Black Friday selection on the store's website, https://oew.at/.

Fashion.at was welcomed by CEO Karin Lichtenegger and textile specialist Michael Geiger in the store, which received the German Design Award in the category Retail Architecture in 2019. Karin Lichtenegger spoke about the ÖW Exclusive collection, which was launched in 2017. One of the highlights of the original ÖW designs is the signature 'Diamond' pattern, which is applied to porcelain, textiles for tablecloths or scarves, and is also used for the store's shopping bag. The design was developed for ÖW in 2018. As a result of the closure of the Backhausen company in June 2023 - Backhausen was one of ÖW's long-time partners for furniture and decorative fabrics - the Österreichische Werkstätten has started to develop new fabrics for interior design. Michael Geiger, who previously worked for Backhausen, is the project manager and will lead the collaboration with the design and weaving team members. Three to six fabric designs will be realized and produced in two to three weaving mills in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. The new fabrics will be launched in the spring of 2024.

When Fashion.at left the X-Mas Warm Up for the media, Österreichische Werkstätten handed out a goodie bag. Inside was an espresso cup and matching saucer in the olive green and gold design by Ugo Zovetti and Christmas cookies from the Austrian coffee house Sluka - like ÖW, part of the List Group, which also runs hotels in Vienna, Carinthia and Tyrol.
Well, the ÖW knows how to make friends! The Christmas cookies will be eaten before the first week of Advent.
