Seen at the Austrian State Prize for Design 2024 exhibition: Noise-absorbing interior element from recycled textiles, shaped by a fashion designer using ancient techniques

Fashion.at took part in the press tour through the exhibition 'Best of Austrian Design', which showcases exceptional designs submitted for the 50th anniversary edition of the Austrian State Prize for Design 2024 by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour and Economy. The tour through the exhibition space of designforum Vienna in the Museumsquartier took place around an hour before the award ceremony started. Jury member Annette Lang, an industrial designer from Germany with a focus on products for the home, office, and kitchen, such as chairs, tables, cutlery, and porcelain, began by introducing the three winners of the State Prize, which were selected from submissions to the categories Consumer Goods, Capital Goods, and Interior Design. In addition to the State Prizes, 12 projects received a Nomination Certificate and another 19 projects received an Award. In addition, 4 projects received special awards for 'Spaces & Environment' and 'Design Concepts'.

One interior product presented at the designforum space is likely to catch the eye of fashion specialists. The pleated design of the hybrid acoustic and lighting element by the Graz-based product design studio '13&9 Design' for the Belgian company BuzziSpace, which specializes in sound-absorbing furniture and solutions, may remind visitors of pleated clothing. Jury member Annette Lang introduced the development of the element called 'BuzziPleat', which can be used with or without lighting. Collaborating designer Sabrina Stadlober of 13&9 Design Studio brought her knowledge and skills in textile and fashion design to the noise-reducing solution, adapting old fashion techniques to fold the Belgian client's 100% recycled material 'BuzziFelt'.

At https://www.13and9design.com/design/6636-2/, the design studio and the designer provide insights into the making-of with a video and pictures of several examples of how the element is used in offices and living spaces. Sabrina Stadlober is quoted with a statement on her view of the role of handicraft and traditional working methods, which will become increasingly important in the future according to the designer. She foresees fashion and textiles evolving into a hybrid system that integrates both old and new knowledge, resulting in unconventional solutions that adhere to significant moral principles.

BuzziPleat received an award in the Interior Design category of the Austrian State Prize for Design.
