Upcycled bags in fashion. Marc Cain and Vaude collaborate to produce bags from the tarpaulins of a fashion tent

Bags made from recycled materials are trendy in design shops, such as the MAK Design Shop at the MAK Museum of Applied Arts with products like the bag made from 100% recycled fabric with a print of the 'Monte Zuma' pattern by Josef Hoffmann, who created it around 1911 for the Wiener Werkstätte, or the upcycled bags presented by the MKG Hamburg from the collaboration with the social project 'Das Rauhe Haus', where shoppers were produced from exhibition posters of the MKG Hamburg for the museum shop Walther König - the shop with branches in several museums throughout Europe is, by the way, also known for a well-curated selection of books about fashion.

The latest news about fashion bags made from pre-used material is Marc Cain's collaboration with Vaude. Both German clothing manufacturers made headlines last year. The strategy of Marc Cain's founder Helmut Schlotterer to create his own foundation from his assets and to transfer the voting rights for the company's future plans to his employees was one of the most extraordinary fashion news from the German-speaking region in 2023. The company was founded in 1973 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023 with guests like actress Diane Kruger. Vaude's achievements as a sustainability pioneer are well known in the industry and have been consistently continued over the years. Recently, the company received two German Sustainability Awards 2024 - Vaude was honored as the most sustainable textile company in Germany in the category 'Textiles' and received the special award 'Value Chain' for its strong commitment to a fair and environmentally friendly supply chain.

Now, the two companies have teamed up to give new life to the leopard-print fashion tent used for Marc Cain's 50th anniversary celebration which took place in summer 2023. Together with Vaude Professional, Vaude's subsidiary for sustainable manufacturing, a practical shopper and a cosmetic bag were designed and manufactured from the tarpaulin material as part of an upcycling campaign. The idea to recycle the tarpaulin was to conserve resources and create a limited edition accessory. The upcycling project aims to avoid waste and reduce CO2 emissions. Both the shopper and the cosmetic bag are made in Germany. Processing and production take place at Vaude's facility in Obereisenbach on Lake Constance. Both companies are regionally based in Baden-Württemberg, which offered the advantage of short transportation routes. In the press release made public this week, the companies point out that the products are also produced in a climate-neutral manner. All emissions from mobility, materials, manufacturing processes and shipping have been calculated and systematically reduced. Emissions that are currently unavoidable will be fully offset by the independent non-profit organization 'myclimate'.
