What are the criteria for submissions to the 2nd Austrian Prize for Ecological Textiles, the Vivienne 2024?

From yesterday until July 15, Austrian labels and designers, including students of fashion schools, can submit their entries for the 'Vivienne' award. The prize, named in memory of sustainability pioneer Vivienne Westwood, is organized for the second time by the COMÚN Foundation and will be handed out by the Federal Minister for Climate Protection, Leonore Gewessler. Last year, the ceremony took place in Hallein, Salzburg. This year, it's announced that the designers will receive their awards at the ministry in Vienna on September 20, presumably close to the Austrian elections, which will be in autumn. Regardless of the outcome of the election, the award has the potential to provide positive impulses in the Austrian design landscape for many years to come as an inspiration for contemporary and responsible clothing production.

Pictures of the inaugural Vivienne award ceremony can be found at https://viviennepreis.at with information on why the winners were chosen. Also in 2024, the prize will be divided into the Jury Prize (4,000 euros) for a scalable project - it's necessary to submit a business plan, the Audience Prize (2,000 euros), which will be awarded according to the highest number of votes, and the Youth Prize for a school project. The website provides all the information needed to submit an entry. In order not to limit creativity, the topic of sustainability is defined very openly. The aim is to change the way fashion is designed and produced, with the well-known challenges of reducing waste, protecting the environment and finding ways to save resources.

On the website, details about the three different award categories can be accessed by clicking on the icons - a button for the Jury Award, a pair of scissors for the Audience Award, and a needle with thread for the Youth Award - or via text links in the navigation menu. The names of the 2024 jury members can be found via a link in the navigation bar; unfortunately, no biographies were available when Fashion.at visited the viviennepreis.at website. The jury is made up of specialists from various fields, such as Andreas Bartl, who does research at the Vienna University of Technology in the fields of fiber separation from textile waste, recycling management, etc., or Veronika Pfeiffer-Gössweiner from the Austrian terry toweling company Herka Frottier, which focuses on sustainability and fair and social working conditions in its production.
