A market for young design in Vienna

Edelstoff is a well-known design market in Vienna. It was founded in 2012 by Sabine Hofstätter and Simone Aichholzer. Both studied in Vienna and established Edelstoff as a platform for independent labels and small manufacturers, with a focus on design beyond mainstream mass production. Since 2016, the design market has taken place in the Marx Halle, one of the city's largest historic event spaces.

Edelstoff happens four times a year: winter, spring, autumn and Christmas. Each edition brings together around 150 to 170 designers and small manufacturers. At the upcoming Edelstoff Winter Market on 21 and 22 February, around 170 exhibitors are announced. Visitors can discover fashion, jewellery, product design, cosmetics, kids' design, art and food – all carefully curated and mostly locally or regionally produced.

Fashion labels from Vienna and beyond

Many labels shown are also known from the Vienna Fashion Week and other design events. Among them are the Austrian label AMATEUR, conceptual menswear by Gerald Pahr, ROEE, which stands for modern womenswear with a minimalist approach, while Verdandy mixes timeless tailoring with a slightly playful, contemporary twist.

Those listed as participants in the next event include labels representing a broad spectrum of approaches and production methods, as demonstrated by BOW TO YAK, Kamen and Other Disaster.

BOW TO YAK is a German fashion label working with natural yak wool sourced from Mongolia. The material comes from nomadic herding communities and is processed using traditional techniques. The label focuses on durable knitwear, fair working conditions and transparency along the supply chain, combining functionality with timeless design.

Kamen is a Vienna-based fashion label that designs clothing with a strong, sometimes utilitarian character. The collections balance functionality and visual impact and are produced in small quantities. Beyond fashion, Kamen is active in local networks and initiatives such as #supportyourlocalgirlgangvienna, supporting visibility and collaboration among women-led creative projects.

Other Disaster is an independent slow-fashion label producing small-scale collections. The designs often feature strong graphic elements, clear concepts and references to art and everyday observations.

This is only a short selection of the fashion labels taking part, as the market brings together a wide range of designers who focus on well-made garments rather than seasonal trends.

More than fashion: food, design and atmosphere

The design market is not only about fashion. Visitors will also find ceramics, furniture, accessories, natural cosmetics, illustrations and design objects. For food lovers, the 1,000 m² street food area offers a wide selection, including Espressomobil, Himalaya Momos, Maze Pizza, Raw Energy and Viki's Sweets on Wheels. The market atmosphere is relaxed and social, with space to talk directly to designers and makers.

Dates and digital access

Further Edelstoff dates this year include 25–26 April, 17–18 October and 5–6 December, all taking place in the Marx Halle. In addition, Edelstoff @ Donauinselfest is scheduled for 3–5 July 2026, bringing a selection of young design to one of Vienna's largest open-air events. For those who cannot travel to Vienna, the market offers an online directory of around 300 label webshops on its website, supporting independent design beyond the market weekend.

The design market shows a side of Vienna where creativity, craftsmanship and personal stories matter – a living alternative to fast fashion, rooted in local culture and independent design.
