14 August 2026 FESCH 2026: How Salzburg Became a Hub for Tracht Fashion![]()
Quick Read
• FESCH takes place from 21–23 August 2026 at Brandboxx in Bergheim bei Salzburg. From regional clothing to fashion statementTraditional Alpine dress was originally functional clothing associated with specific regions and communities. Its transformation into fashionable clothing accelerated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when summer visitors discovered the Alpine regions as destinations for "Sommerfrische". Salzburg became particularly influential because tourism, culture and fashion increasingly overlapped. The Salzburg Festival, founded in 1920, added another international stage. By the Festival's first heyday in the early 1930s, stars and visitors were wearing dirndls, traditional jackets, Tracht suits and lederhosen. It's part of a lifestyle that combines the city's cultural setting, summer tourism and the idea of a distinctly Salzburg identity. That history does not mean Salzburg invented Tracht fashion. Its significance lies more in the way traditional clothing was turned into a visible lifestyle and, later, into a professionally organised fashion market. From MGC to BrandboxxThe commercial infrastructure followed later. The MGC Textil- und Modegroßhandelscenter was founded in 1981 as a textile and fashion wholesale centre. In 1983, its concept was developed further into a presentation platform with showrooms and trade fairs. In 2008, following a takeover by TCN, MGC/MEC was renamed Brandboxx Salzburg. This history helps explain Salzburg's particular role in Tracht today. The city did not originate the fashion trend, but the concentration of manufacturers, showrooms, buyers and seasonal trade fairs created a structure for distributing and presenting new collections across the Alpine market. In that sense, Brandboxx became part of the industry's infrastructure rather than the source of the tradition itself.FESCH 2026: A trade fair, not a public fashion eventFESCH evolved from the long-running TRACHTEN Order Tage. The final edition under that name took place in August 2022; the event was relaunched as FESCH in 2023. The 2026 edition runs from 21 to 23 August. According to the organisers, around 250 brands will present collections covering everything from dirndls and lederhosen to shoes, accessories and children's Tracht, with a focus on trends for 2027. The event remains strictly B2B: admission is for trade buyers and requires registration, with an invitation or proof of a business registration (Gewerbeschein). The opening Friday adds two public-facing elements to the professional format: fashion shows at 11:00 and 14:00, followed by the FESCH Kirtag from 18:00, with live music, fairground attractions and food. This year's ambassador is German television presenter Karen Webb, best known for presenting ZDF's Leute heute from 2007 until the programme ended in 2023. She has also reported from events including the Oscars, the Venice Film Festival and Paris Fashion Week and now works as a media trainer and lecturer. From finished garments to the next material trendsFESCH is followed almost immediately by another piece of the fashion industry's supply chain. From 1 to 3 September 2026, the SMS Stoffmusterschau will bring textile suppliers, producers and professional buyers together at Brandboxx. Fabrics, new designs, qualities, buttons and accessories are presented as material options for upcoming collections. The sequence is revealing: FESCH shows how Tracht is being designed, marketed and ordered as fashion; SMS moves one step further back in the chain, to the materials from which those future collections will be made.
