Vienna Fashion Week: Women Redefining Age and Cultural Borders

Fashion Reloaded runway at Vienna Fashion Week 2026.
Quick Read

• The 14 September opening presented one look from each participating label rather than full collections.
• On 15 September, the focus shifted from opening-night visibility to the clothes themselves.
Fashion Reloaded powered by Pensionist*innenklubs Wien returned for its third Vienna Fashion Week appearance with 57 looks under the title fenWomenal.
• Atena Neuhuber's Fashion Academy followed with 26 Iranian designers and the concept 1001 Nights – Tonight.
• Both presentations placed women, creativity and self-determination beyond conventional age or cultural boundaries at the centre.
• VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 runs until 19 September in the MuseumsQuartier.

From the opening crowd to the collections

The opening of VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 on 14 September followed a familiar fashion-week pattern: Velvet Nights presented one selected look from each of the 36 participating designers and labels. The format offered a quick preview of the variety still to come. As is traditional on opening night, media attention also focused strongly on the prominent guests in the audience.

From 15 September, however, the emphasis changed. With the first regular runway shows, the clothes, their makers and the ideas behind them moved much more clearly into the foreground. The first day of shows also happened to be strongly shaped by women who do not fit easily into conventional expectations of age, career or cultural background.

Fashion Reloaded: age is not the limit

At 4pm, Fashion Reloaded powered by Pensionist*innenklubs Wien presented fenWomenal. The project began in 2024, when members of Klub+ Atelier created and showed their own upcycled collection at Vienna Fashion Week for the first time. It returned in 2025 and is now appearing for the third consecutive year.

The current collection comprises 57 looks. Existing garments and personal textile memories were transformed into individual pieces. The title fenWomenal combines the idea of women with something exceptional and deliberately shifts attention away from conventional images of age and femininity.

What makes the project interesting is that its social message is embedded in the actual production process. The women are not simply models representing an age group: they participate in designing and making the clothes. In 2024, the original group included women aged from 60 to 81; in 2025, 21 Atelier+ members aged 60 to 82 took part.

The result is less a demonstration of "fashion for seniors" than an example of people continuing to create, learn and appear publicly outside the age roles normally assigned to them. Upcycling adds another layer: existing materials and personal histories become the starting point for new designs.

Atena Neuhuber: 26 designers, one journey

At 6pm, the focus moved from Vienna's senior designers to an international educational project. Atena Neuhuber's Fashion Academy presented the 2026 Design Beyond Limits! OUTCOUTURE Masterclass. The programme combines fashion research, creative development and professional practice rather than treating fashion education simply as technical training.

The collection 1001 Nights – Tonight was developed around the metaphor "From Darkness to Light" and brought together work by 26 Iranian designers. Its five chapters — Dawn of Isfahan, Market of Dreams, Garden of Eden, Desert Mirage and Night Court — connect different visual worlds with ideas of transformation, resilience, hope and new beginnings.

Neuhuber, the creative force behind the Austrian label ATENA, works across fashion and visual art. Her designs begin with her own hand-painted artworks, which are translated into textile prints and garments. The label describes its approach as made-to-order and slow fashion, with an emphasis on limited production and distinctive silhouettes.

For the Fashion Week presentation, this artistic language becomes part of a wider story: fashion as a means of communicating identity and experience across cultural borders.

A week still unfolding

The two shows illustrate how quickly the perspective can change at Vienna Fashion Week. One presentation starts with clothes that already have a history; the other with designers developing new visual languages in a very different cultural context. Both challenge the idea that fashion belongs to a narrow age group or follows only seasonal commercial cycles.

And this is only the beginning. More runway shows, presentations, talks and projects follow through 19 September at the MuseumsQuartier.
