• Five Austrian design labels will present their interpretations of ball gowns at the Vienna State Opera.
AUFTAKT: A prelude to the Opera Ball and carnival seasonThe Vienna State Opera is setting the scene for the 2027 Opera Ball with its traditional Couture Salon. On November 11, five Austrian design labels will present ball gowns in the Opera's ceremonial rooms. The event is called AUFTAKT, meaning Prelude or Opening. The title captures two beginnings: the preparations for the Vienna Opera Ball and the start of the carnival season, when the city's annual ball calendar gets underway. The presentation is an invitation-only event for sponsors, donors, benefactors and partners of the Vienna State Opera. It is not open to the general public. The Couture Salon has been part of the Opera Ball's associated programme since 2014. Its purpose is to bring Austrian fashion design into the context of Vienna's long-standing ball tradition. In previous years, the presentation was usually held at the Hotel Bristol. As the hotel is currently undergoing renovation, the State Opera's own ceremonial rooms provide the setting this time. Ball gowns presented by ballet dancersOne of the Salon's defining features is its choice of models. Rather than relying on conventional runway models, the event brings together fashion and dance: dancers from the Vienna State Ballet will present the gowns. This gives the presentation an additional dimension. Ball dresses are not simply garments to be viewed from the front. Their proportions, weight and construction become particularly apparent when the wearer moves. The movement of a dancer can reveal how a skirt falls, how a silhouette changes during a turn and how a design responds to the body. The exact creations planned for AUFTAKT have not yet been announced. The five participating labels, however, already suggest a wide range of interpretations of contemporary ball fashion. Juwelier Wagner, Lancôme and Kérastase are named as partners of the event. Five designers, five distinct approaches to coutureThe selection brings together designers whose work differs considerably in style and technique.• Thang de Hoo is known for sculptural silhouettes, generous volumes and strong colour contrasts. His designs combine graphic black and white with vivid red, sequins and striking details. The effect often depends on how the garments move. • Femme Maison, founded by Franziska Fürpass, takes a more understated approach. Flowing silk, handmade details and traditional couture techniques define the label's aesthetic. Fürpass studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and worked for designers including Vivienne Westwood. The label designs and produces its creations in Vienna. • Michel Mayer, the label of Michaela Mayer-Lee, focuses on clear lines, precise workmanship and feminine silhouettes. Movement and the relationship between fabric and the human body are central to its design philosophy. Its couture pieces are made in the Vienna atelier. • Eva Poleschinski is particularly associated with elaborate ball gowns and unconventional bridal designs. Material combinations, individual details and elaborate craftsmanship are characteristic of her work. Her creations have appeared at international red-carpet events, including the Oscars and Golden Globes. • Wabisabi Vintage Kimono Fashion, founded by Vera Redlich, brings a historical textile perspective to the selection. The label reworks vintage Japanese kimonos collected over many years, using materials such as silk, brocade, linen and cotton. Each creation is an individual piece that gives the original fabric and its history a new context. From sculptural volumes and flowing silk to elaborate eveningwear and reworked Japanese textiles, the five labels represent very different ideas of what a ball gown can be. Why ball fashion remains important in ViennaIn Vienna, dressing for a ball is more than a seasonal fashion trend. The city's extensive ball calendar sustains a tradition of formalwear that has a much more visible place in everyday fashion culture than in many other European capitals. Couture studios, dressmakers and tailoring workshops continue to play an important role in this environment. Made-to-measure clothing is central to this tradition. A bespoke ball gown involves more than choosing an attractive fabric or silhouette. Its construction must take account of the wearer's proportions, the weight of the material and the demands of an evening spent standing, walking and dancing. Individual fittings and skilled craftsmanship remain essential. The Couture Salon makes this relationship between fashion, craftsmanship and social tradition visible. While international fashion often focuses on seasonal collections and ready-to-wear, Vienna's ball culture continues to provide a reason for creating garments for a particular person and occasion. The 69th Vienna Opera Ball will take place on February 4, 2027, at the Vienna State Opera. AUFTAKT offers an early look at the designers and craftsmanship that form part of the preparations for this annual event. |
