Fashion.at Earth Day Tip: On April 22, the City of Vienna launches the online registration for the 'Pflanz mich' (plant me) initiative of the current biodiversity campaign.

Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22 with different themes each year. This year's theme, 'Planet vs. Plastics,' includes the fashion industry as one of the biggest threats to the planet. In particular, it cites overconsumption - with people buying 60 percent more clothes than 15 years ago and keeping them for half as long - unfair working conditions and the use of materials that contribute to the planet's pollution. "Nearly 70% of clothing is made from crude oil, resulting in the release of dangerous microfibers when washed and continued contribution to long-term pollution in landfills." Earth Day is here to raise awareness to change one's own behavior in favor of protecting planet Earth. Fashion at searched the recent press releases received by the magazine for any activities taking place in Vienna on this day and found the information about the biodiversity campaign and the new 'Pflanz mich' (plant me) herb plant kits from the City of Vienna. The initiative is not explicitly an Earth Day event. The herb packs will be distributed on two days in May. However, registration to receive them will begin on April 22.

The herb planting sets for the Viennese home, the balcony, the terrace or the windowsill are offered free of charge as part of the city's Climate Tour. The packages include thyme, sage, and lavender, which not only add flavor to the kitchen, but also attract wild bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, thus boosting biodiversity. In the released information, the Environmental Protection Department of the City of Vienna explains that 'biodiversity' refers to the variety of life forms found in a given ecosystem, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, and the complex interactions among them. Preserving biodiversity is critical to maintaining ecosystems, providing ecosystem services such as pollination, water purification, and climate regulation, and ultimately supporting human well-being.

Participants in the 'Pflanz mich' initiative must register online at www.umweltschutz.wien.gv.at/pflanzen-verteilaktion.html to pick up their packages on May 27 or May 29 at two locations in Vienna.

The dates and locations of the tour stops of the fleet of e-cargo bikes are published on www.wien.gv.at/klimatour. On May 27 and 29, the 'Pflanz mich' herb plant packages will be handed out for free to registered participants; registration starts on April 22. City Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky emphasized in the press release that the campaign makes aware of how easy it can be to do something for biodiversity in the city.
