Fashion.at Tip for Mediterranean Dining in Vienna: New restaurant opened in historic building by architect Otto Wagner at the Danube Canal

The Vienna Danube Canal is a popular recreational area in the center of Vienna. Citizens use the promenade along the Danube branch for relaxing walks, city bike tours, running activities and meetings in the gastronomic locations. Unfortunately, most of the restaurants and bars with mainly outdoor areas are closed during the colder months. Yesterday, a new promising restaurant opened on the Danube Canal. The name of the restaurant 'Otto Will Meer' refers to one of the most famous architects of the Viennese Art Nouveau, Otto Wagner, who is also the architect of the building of the three-story restaurant. The words 'will Meer' imply a recreational atmosphere at the water's edge. The German words outspoken sound similar to 'Otto will mehr', which translates to 'Otto wants more'...

'Otto will Meer' is the latest restaurant of the Litus Group, which is known for various successful gastronomic projects such as the popular 'Allee' and 'Eisliebe' on the Prater Hauptallee or the 'Blumenwiese', also located on the Danube Canal, not far from the new destination. Yesterday, Otto Will Meer officially opened in Vienna's Schützenhaus, a historic building located at Obere Donaustraße 26 on the banks of the Danube Canal. The restaurant offers Mediterranean cuisine with a menu of tapas, seafood, paella and other southern European specialties.

The Schützenhaus, a listed building, was designed by the renowned Jugendstil architect Otto Wagner and built between 1904 and 1908 as part of the project to regulate the Danube Canal. It was originally part of the Kaiserbad lock complex. Although the lock was damaged during the Second World War and ceased to function, the Schützenhaus survived and was restored in 1977. The building's architecture shows Wagner's signature style, with a facade that blends granite, marble, and blue tiles decorated with wave motifs. Otto Will Meer spans three floors, with a tapas bar and open kitchen on the ground floor, a dining area on the first floor, and an exclusive room on the top floor with views of the Ringturm and the city. The restaurant aims to create a holiday atmosphere, combining Mediterranean flair with the building's historic charm.
