Viennese café-confectionery Aida sweetens travel with new gastro location at the Berlin Central Station

Last year, the family-owned company Aida, which has been in business since 1913, gave a first hint of where the journey would take them on the occasion of further expansion steps and plans to take Viennese coffee and confectionery culture beyond the borders of Austria (article). Over the past few months, it has become clear that this will indeed be a travelogue. And the story will take place in places along railroad tracks and flight routes.

This week, Aida announced that it has opened its second traditional Viennese cafe and confectionery branch in Germany, located at Berlin's Central Station (video on Instagram). This expansion follows the opening of a cafe at the Munich Airport in May 2024. The Berlin location is franchised by Lagardère Travel Retail and is the first shop-in-shop concept within a Lagardère Relay Shop.

Aida is known for its iconic pink design and its dedication to preserving the Viennese coffeehouse tradition. The company's name, Aida, was chosen by founder Josef Prousek as a tribute to his favorite composer, Giuseppe Verdi, and because the 1913 Vienna telephone directory listed Aida first. The expansion to Berlin's main station is part of a larger international effort, with new branches planned, including at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (preview on Instagram).

The offer in Berlin includes classic Viennese coffee varieties such as Melange, Einspänner and pastries that retain their original names, says Dominik Prousek, fourth-generation owner of the Aida family, in the press release. As an example, Prousek cites the 'Topfengolatsche', which keeps its Viennese name in Berlin and has not been Germanized into 'Quark-Tasche'.
