11 May 2025 ![]() A Café, a Pope, and a BlessingThe timing couldn't have been more symbolic: as the Pummerin bell rang out from St. Stephen's Cathedral to mark the election of a new pope in Rome, a new chapter in Vienna's café culture was being written just a stone's throw away. The Figlmüller Group, renowned for shaping Vienna's culinary scene since 1905, unveiled its latest gem – the Café am Dom.Dompfarrer Toni Faber, the charismatic priest often referred to as the soul of St. Stephen's, was interviewed on site during the event and personally blessed the new café. With a twinkle in his eye, he remarked, "When a new café opens so close to the cathedral, a blessing from above is only fitting – and a good espresso certainly doesn't hurt the soul." Known for his unique role at the intersection of faith and culture, Toni Faber – who was honored with the 2024 Vienna Art Award (Special Prize for Art Mediation) – brought both ceremonial dignity and personal warmth to the opening. As initiator of the Kunst im Dom program, which brings contemporary art into dialogue with sacred space at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Faber's presence reflected the café's aspiration to become not just a social hub but a place of cultural resonance in the heart of Vienna. The Figlmüllers: Where Schnitzel is Legendary – and Now, Coffee is DivineThe opening of Café am Dom marks another milestone for the Figlmüller family, a name synonymous with Viennese culinary excellence. Famous worldwide for their iconic Figlmüller Schnitzel, the group operates a range of beloved venues, from the classic Figlmüller restaurants in the first district to the modern brasserie Joma and streetfood concept Brioche & Brösel. At the helm are Hans and Thomas Figlmüller, who shape the group's distinctive blend of tradition and innovation. "This café is more than just a new location – it's a love letter to Vienna and its coffeehouse culture," the brothers shared during the opening. Inside, the café combines old-world charm with Mediterranean ease. Signature drinks like creative spritzes are served alongside antipasti, truffle pinsa, mini Schnitzels with potato salad, and classic Italian-inspired dishes. Open daily from 9 AM to 11 PM, it welcomes early risers, business lunchers, and aperitivo lovers alike. A Stylish Crowd and a Sparkling EveningThe grand opening drew a dazzling guest list from across Vienna's cultural, political, and creative spheres. Also in attendance: artist Martin Grandits, fashion designer Maurizio Giambra, opera and nightlife personalities, sommeliers, entrepreneurs, and culinary insiders. With music by DJ Max Wanderer and views from the cathedral's South Tower, guests celebrated not just a new café, but a new meeting point for the city's tastemakers and visitors.
