The 'new normal': New fashion of non-medical masks, boost for online shops, furniture for social distancing in public spaces

The pandemic hurts economies hard through all countries worldwide. Experts in Austria calculate the worst development on the job market since World War II and it seems as if the only solution in the meanwhile is to try to adjust life and work to the coronavirus as long as no vaccine is available. And there is no vaccine available even when some promote abstruse medical cures! Nothing is tested officially yet with the needed positive results for being distributed on the health market!
Fashion.at collected some news concerning new products and services developed on occasion of the 'new normal' which can be defined as a new behaviour to interact with each other. Face masks and social distancing (around 1,5 meters) are the visual signs of the new fashion (in the meaning of 'way of life') alongside to extended hygiene routines like washing hands more thoroughly and cleaning surfaces of for example door handles more often.

Let's start with face masks. Yesterday, the Austrian companies Lenzing and Palmers presented (press release) the new collaborative 'Hygiene Austria LP GmbH' with focus on certified protective masks for medical staff. It's announced that Hygiene Austria with a planned capacity of 25 million masks per month starts to sell the products from May.

Non-medical masks are the theme at the Otto Group subsidiary 'About You' where from 28 April in the first step around 200.000 masks in a wide range by partners like Armed Angels, Odlo, Urban Classics, and startups such as Grubenhelden, BeWooden or Oderso by activist Fynn Kliemann will be available. From mid-May, exclusive mask designs by 'About You Idols' like Lena Gercke, whose 'LeGer by Lena Gercke' is one of the highlights of the current About You range, or creations by popular German designer and TV-personality Guido Maria Kretschmer will be launched, followed by styles by supermodel Karolína Kurková or by musician and MDLA designer Bill Kaulitz. It's announced that four million masks are already ordered and will arrive in the next weeks. The masks will be sold for the shopping platform's cost price which starts for basic models at 1,70.- Euros.

At aboutyou-masken.de, the mission of the new project is explained as answer to the recommendation of the German government to wear masks in public, the shortage of supply and as answer to the observed greed for profit through expensive prices for masks. Additionally, About You explains how the masks can protect by reducing the spread of droplets and
by supporting the awareness of 'social distancing' with link to the page of the German 'Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices' where an oversight of the differences between non-medical and medical masks is published.

Buying a motorcycle or reading comfortably books at brick & mortar stores are experiences that go hand in hand with trying out a bike, interesting talks about the latest news concerning traffic regulations or - at the bookstore, the chance to speak with a person who shares the same interests when it comes to literature. Now, this is furthermore possible - only with mask and by keeping distance. The boost of digital commerce supports consumers - the ones who prefer to shop online as well as the ones who search for information about the retailer's available range.

Two days ago on 23 April on occasion of World Book Day, the directory buchhandel.at of the Austrian book stores and book publishers was launched. Fashion.at tested the buchhandel.at website and found interesting literature at a store located at a small street in Vienna's Inner City; chicklit.at is the address of the store's website & online shop. The next brick & mortar book store that will be visited by Fashion.at is ChickLit! Why did we have to wait so long for a website like buchhandel.at?

On the same day, the 23rd April, the Austrian furniture specialist for offices 'Bene' presented the new product 'Shielded' under the motto 'Physical Distancing to stay social'. 'Shielded' are transparent protection shields made of acrylic against droplets for reducing the threat of infections.
