Vienna Insights: Preview of the costume designs by Stefano Canulli for the Holiday on Ice show 'Supernova' (19 - 30 January 2022)

Currently, the Austrians like people in many other countries are going through the 4th wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The measures to break the wave are very similar globally. Most important is to increase the vaccination rate followed by measures like wearing FFP2 masks when using public transport services for example, hand hygiene, and keeping distance from others. The measures are developed by experts from constantly updated calculations of statistical data such as numbers/per day of new infections, hospitalisations, intensive care patients and deaths. Serious short-term predictions can't be given. So let's look ahead to January 2022!

Fashion.at looked through the press material for fashion related news and found the announcement of the Holiday on Ice show 'Supernova' from 19 to 30 January 2022 in Vienna. The Supernova story is a fantastic romantic travel through the universe and may remind of classical opera libretti and theatre plays spiced with magic and mysticism. The galactic story is described closer at the website of Stadthalle Wien where the ice show, choreographed and directed by former professional athlete, figure skater (Olympic gold medalist in 1980, World and European champion) Robin Cousins, will happen. Not on view on the website (fast checked today at stadthalle.com) are the great sketches by costume designer Stefano Canulli which were set for the presentation to the media in relation to the realized designs. The name of the Italian costume, fashion illustrator and designer Stefano Canulli is mentioned online together with iconic designers like Thierry Mugler, Philip Treacy or the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) where his illustrations were exhibited already. The collaboration with the fashion house Mugler started 1992 for fashion creations, advertising campaigns, and perfumes like 'Angel'. Years later, the collaboration with Thierry Mugler was continued for the creation of costume designs for the cabaret-like Cirque du Soleil show 'Zumanity' (premiered 2003). In 2010, Stefano Canulli was the costume designer of Cirque du Soleil's 'Viva Elvis!' and four years later in 2014, Canulli was the responsible designer for around 500 costumes and makeup at Thierry Mugler's show 'The Wyld' at Friedrichstadt-Palast in Berlin.

Glamorous stages are the terrain of Stefano Canulli. For 'Supernova' by Holiday on Ice, he added his style for the first time to the functional acrobatic dresses of ice dancers.
