Presentation of the model of the fountain for a public space in Favoriten, the 10th district of Vienna, by the art group Gelatin on occasion of 150-years modern water supply in Vienna for making aware of people's responsibility to value and protect water resources

Favoriten, the 10th district of Vienna is a very multifaceted part of the city reaching from populous regions to agricultural areas. The district isn't especially known for art in public space activities or art initiatives in general despite Favoriten has become over the years the location for art & design events such as in 2015 when the base of the annually changing headquarters of the Vienna Design Week moved to the district or in 2018 when the show of the students and graduates of the Fashion Department of the University of Applied Arts happened here (article). The 'Brotfabrik' was in both mentioned cases the chosen location. Not far from the building of the Brotfabrik at the corner Gudrunstrasse/Sonnwendgasse, the realization of the next art project is in progress. This time, the art project is planned to stay for making people aware of the responsibility and power of the community to protect the resource water.

The art initiative of the Department 'Wiener Wasser' (Vienna Water) of the City of Vienna in cooperation with the institution 'KÖR - Kunst im öffentlichen Raum (Public Art Vienna) on occasion of next year's 150-years anniversary of the first water supply (24 October 1873) via a mountain spring pipeline from the Alps was started with a competition. Yesterday on 23 July, the winning art project for the jubilee fountain by the four-members art group Gelatin (aka Gelitin) - known internationally for provokant playful and often heavily discussed works - was presented with the first view of the model of the artwork created for making aware of the responsibility of us all to protect water resources. The fountain consists of a circle of figures formed from concrete with an inner diameter of 7.5 meters. The figures are sitting very close together so that their bodies form a unit that holds the water in the basin together. "The fountain gives us a sense of unity and shows us that we are the ones who must value and protect our water," is the intention behind the 'WirWasser' fountain described by Gelatin artist Wolfgang Gantner.

It's announced that the project and all submitted designs to the competition will be exhibited from 8 August until 1 September 2022 at the district administration Favoriten at Keplerplatz 5. Additionally, it will be on view virtually from 8 August at wien.gv.at/jubilaeumsbrunnen/.
