International route planning, navigation app komoot released findings of an online survey among Austrians about favorite outdoor leisure activities

The online poll among 1,000 Austrians about their favorite outdoor leisure activities was conducted by the international survey specialist OnePoll for the route planning and navigation app komoot in September 2022. Now, the findings of the representative (in relation to age, gender of the country's population) study via online questionnaire were published with a press release for insights into the development of leisure activities in the near past and an outlook to the future.

The pandemic is one of the driving forces behind the trend for choosing the bike more often. According to the results of the questionnaire survey, more than a fifth (32%) say they have found their passion for two-wheeled fun since the pandemic. Questioned after the outdoor activities practiced regularly, one activity tops them all: Going for a walk is practiced by 91% of the questioned people at least once a month; about 55% even do this several times a week.
The second position at the favorite activity ranking is with 54% cycling (short routes), the 3rd is with 51 % hiking, followed by 44% running, and 35% of the respondents named bike tours. Eva Kuprella, Marketing Manager DACH komoot, reports at the press release that since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of users of komoot has tripled to 28 million users.

The survey included questions around the activities such as the usage of public transportation services or cars (the picture above shows the results). Even when responsible behavior in nature is particularly important for 88% when traveling, only 35% are taking the bus, train, etc. while 63% are traveling with the car. Asked after the reason for outdoor activities, 54% named the reduction of stress and mental health. 69% of the respondents are using an app for orientation and 49% are inspired by social media, apps, and websites for tours.

The OnePoll X komoot survey among Austrians provides also outlooks for future strategies such as the wish for a better inclusion of groups with worse access to nature and outdoor experiences caused by physical or social limitations. Komoot announced the further development of activities at the app which has started already with the 'Women's Weekender' events specifically aimed at women, non-binary people and trans people.
