KHM - Kunsthistorisches Museum exhibition 'lron Men. Fashion in Steel' presents the Renaissance harness from perspectives like fashion, politics, or gender-specific behavior (29 Mar - 26 Jun, Vienna)

Visitors of the exhibition 'Iron Men. Fashion in Steel' at the art historical museum KHM - Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (29 March - 26 June) can explore the expression of masculinity through harnesses of the Renaissance from the late 15th to the early 17th century from collections of museums in Europe and US like the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Real Armería in Madrid or from Austria's Imperial Armoury, the Wiener Hofjagd und Rüstkammer. The masterpieces made by European master-armorers were once worn on battlefields, tournaments or court festivals. The show is orchestrated with additional artworks from fine arts like paintings, sculptures as well as textiles for the exploration of the representation of leadership, power with an impact that lasts until our days on gender-specific behavior - only that the historical armor 'harness' is replaced by other symbolic representations of masculinity which dominate the imagery in today's media.

At the press release, KHM introduces into the approach of throwing light from various perspectives on armors: "The exhibition examines the symbolic meaning of the harness in early modern society, illustrating its role as a political and dynastic symbol, diplomatic gift, personal and/or historical memento and, last but not least, a fashionable piece of attire made of steel…"
