Austria's top education for fashion design, the Fashion Design Department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, appointed award-winning British designer Craig Green as new professor

Austria has several universities and schools where fashion design can be studied, but only a few are mentioned by professionals when asked to name the best education in the country. The Fashion Department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna offers not only one of the highest academic education in the field of fashion, it is also one of the most prestigious. Not only because of the successful careers of graduates like Kenneth Ize (finalist of the 2019 LVMH Prize), Christoph Rumpf (winner of the Hyères Festival 2019) or other graduates who hold leading positions in the fashion industry and work for brands such as Balenciaga, Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, OAMC, Prada, Comme des Garçons or Maison Margiela.

The names of the department chairs read like a who-is-who of important thinkers and innovators in fashion. The Fashion Department's tradition of appointing an internationally renowned designer as professor began in the early 1980s with Karl Lagerfeld. Since then, designers such as Jil Sander, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Vivienne Westwood, Helmut Lang, Raf Simons, Veronique Branquinho, Lucie and Luke Meier or, last semester, Grace Wales Bonner have led the class. (Fashion.at article about the last show of the students and graduates of the 'Modeklasse', as the department is called, under the direction of Wales Bonner.)

Today the University of Applied Arts Vienna announced the new professor of the Modeklasse in a press release: British designer Craig Green is the new professor for fashion design, starting in October 2023. Craig Green's distinctive menswear creations that explore uniformity and utility are highlighted, as well as his work beyond fashion, which has been featured in exhibitions and films. The University of Applied Arts Vienna points out that Green's appointment continues the tradition of notable professors. It's announced that Craig Green will work closely with the students over the next three years.

The press release at dieangewandte.at details Craig Green's career, beginning with his studies at Central Saint Martins College, the launch of his own label in 2012, and continues with notes on Green's approach to fashion design, such as innovative new developments of common garments like the Worker Jacket, the designer's work for exhibitions and costumes for opera and film, and the awards he has received.
