The hidden work of natural sciences made visible by scientists and a photographer at the Natural History Museum 'Long Night of Museums' on 7 October in Vienna

Whether it's Christian Dior's 1947 'Ligne Corolle' that became famous as the flower-shaped New Look, or Iris van Herpen's 3D printed garments that resemble organic structures such as coral reefs and plant roots, the natural world is not only an inspiration for fashion designers; in the case of Stella McCartney, nature provides the solution for new materials such as the vegan leather developed from mushrooms. Inspirations like these come from exploring nature, which can be done intuitively and/or analytically, just as scientists approach subjects.

For insights into the work of natural scientists, including meetings with researchers, and a photographer's creative view of scientists' normally hidden workspaces, the Natural History Museum in Vienna will open its doors on 7 October from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m under the title 'Archives of the Future' as part of the 'Long Night of Museums' initiated by the Austrian public broadcaster ORF.

The NHM Vienna's rich collections include items such as minerals, fossils, meteorites, human skeletons, and specimens from the animal and plant world. These collections are continually examined using new scientific methods. It's announced that the 'Archives of the Future' event will feature NHM Vienna scientists presenting their research and objects from the museum's vast collection at various stations, including mineralogy, paleontology, prehistory, anthropology, and central research laboratories. There will also be a 3D museum showcasing the past in three dimensions. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to see behind-the-scenes photographs of the museum captured by photographer Stefan Oláh, from the underground storage facility to the museum's dome.

At https://www.nhm-wien.ac.at/en/monthly_program/long_night_of_museums_4, a list of special events can be found such as the 'Biodiversity and Science' event where visitors can view through the microscope to identify individual species or Vienna Astronomy Association's special event to look through telescopes at the stars above Vienna, or the cultural-historical walk through the museum with a cocktail on the roof overlooking Vienna.

The photographer's exhibition 'Insides. Behind the Scenes of the Natural History Museum Vienna" was recently opened in Hall 21 and can be visited during the ORF's Long Night of Museums on 7 October 2023.
