Insights into the exhibition 'On Stage - All the Art World's a Stage' at mumok in Vienna with points of contact with the fashion and entertainment industry

Today, Fashion.at visited the press conference with a guided tour by curator Rainer Fuchs through the new exhibition 'On Stage - All the Art World's a Stage' on two floors of the mumok (museum moderner kunst stiftung ludwig) in Vienna. The official opening event happens today at 19:00 with 'Kinky Muppet' live on stage. One of the members of 'Kinky Muppet' is painter Katrin Plavcak. She is one of the artists whose works - around 150 mainly from the mumok collection - are presented for exploring the theatrical and role playing in art from various perspectives.
Katrin Plavcak's 'Painting History Revisited' from 2012 shows important women from the history of art like Artemisia Gentileschi or Élisabeth Vigée-Le Brun. In the exhibition it's placed as a counterweight for the perception of those who create art and culture next to a painting by Jörg Immendorff. The artist united in his painting a selection of important figures - mainly men - for portraying the German art scene.

In an adjoining room at one of the halls, visitors become part of the exhibition staging by finding themselves in the reflections of a corner mirror by Michelangelo Pistoletto. The mirror is by the way the best place in the exhibition for taking selfies. The framed mirror is located next to a large-format photograph by Thomas Struth, who presents the audience as the main actor.

Last but not least, a third example selected from the many and various theatrical and role-playing aspects of 'On Stage': How art is used for exploring 'Gender Roles and Identity Games' is a topic that has many points of contact with the fashion and entertainment industry. One of the artists in this section is Cindy Sherman. Her work 'Untitled #464' from 2008 appears on the folder and posters of the exhibition. It shows her in an elegant evening gown in a theater or opera. One of the artist's themes is "how the role models propagated by the film and media industries affect the real-life appearance and behavior of their consumers. At the same time, presenting ourselves as someone else demonstrates how our identities are formed and transformed through our exchanges with others," as visitors can read in the accompanying hall text.

Part of this section of 'On Stage' is the performative artwork 'Untitled' (Go-Go Dancing Platform) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres with a go-go dancer, who dances for himself, not for the audience. He can decide when he performs and the music he listens through the headphones. For Felix Gonzalez-Torres, who died of AIDS in 1997, autonomy and privacy were central topics as an answer to the homophobic society of his time.
