6 February 2023 ![]() Currently, the Austrians are in semester break mode. The special half-time school year holidays happen traditionally at different times in the nine federal states of the country. The Semesterferien (Semester holidays) were introduced in the mid-70ies on occasion of the oil crisis to save energy under the name 'Energieferien'. The saving of energy wasn't achieved like Austria's largest energy provider Wien Energie knows; the energy consumption has only shifted from home and schools to ski slopes and hotels.
Over the years, the name was changed to Semesterferien. This time of the year is for the people, who tank energy through winter sports and in relaxing spas, and for the Austrian tourist destinations as important as the summer holidays. The regions developed a wide range of specialized offers for the whole family.
Recently, one of the country's destinations which attracts guests over the whole year received once again international attention for the quality of its health services.
