Fashion.at looked through the shortlist for the Austrian State Prize 2024, which is published on https://staatspreis-design.at/. The products range from trains, a sailing boat, bicycles, an e-scooter, rollators to AI binoculars and seating solutions for public spaces or a guidance system for a museum. The shortlist includes the 'ÖBB Nightjet' in the design by the British company Priestman Goode for Siemens Mobility Austria, the sailboat 'Sunbeam 29.1' by Sunbeam Watersports, the e-bike 'Vello Sub Titan' designed by Valentin Vodev in Vienna, the e-scooter 'Husqvarna Skutta' by a team of designers for the Austrian company KTM, firefighters' gloves designed by Tino Valentinitsch and Michael Bauchowitz for Eska, AI binoculars designed by Marc Newson for Swarovski-Optik, etc. In the category 'Spaces & Environment' the aspects of solutions regarding urban design and guidance systems with benefits for the community are central. This year, the jury selected eight products such as the inclusive guidance system at the new Wien Museum, the bench for the public bench 'King Arthur', or the 'Anywhere.Solar - Voltwing' photovoltaik-carports, for example. The shortlist was published after the jury met in Vienna to select the finalists. The Staatspreis Design by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Labour and Economy is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It is organized by designaustria. This year's jury was once again made up of experts from a variety of design backgrounds.
A total of 218 submissions from 157 designers and companies were evaluated, covering various fields such as industrial design, consumer goods, interior design, and capital goods. From these submissions, 35 entries were shortlisted for their exceptional quality and creativity.
Annette Lang, a jury member, expressed her admiration for the high standard of entries, noting the complexity and memorable nature of the designs. The prize will be awarded to three projects, with an additional 12 nominations and 19 awards. Four special prizes, including the DesignImpact-Concepts category, will also be granted, with a total prize money of 6,000 euros.
