Kunsthalle Wien presents artist Aleksandra Domanovic: Art on science and technology with a focus on robotics, media, gender and identity

Aleksandra Domanovic's first solo exhibition in Austria will open on September 4 at 6 pm with a talk with Carson Chan, Director of the Emilio Ambasz Institute for the Joint Study of the Built and Natural Environment at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The artist, who was born in 1981 in Novi Sad, former Yugoslavia, today Serbia, studied graphic design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and has already exhibited around the world. On more than 1,000 square meters at the Kunsthalle, works from the last 18 years will be on display, ranging from a website on an environmental topic to sculptural works such as a robot hand. The first glimpses of the exhibition give a sense of a critical look at today's challenging issues, with a strong focus on gender and identity, seen through a science-fiction art lens.

Aleksandra Domanovic's work is deeply engaged with topics surrounding robotics and media, particularly how these fields intersect with gender, identity, and the legacy of historical narratives. Her exploration of robotics is rooted in the cultural and technological history of the Balkans, as well as in broader global contexts. This is evident in works such as her reinterpretation of the robotic hand designed by Serbian scientist Rajko Tomovic (lived from 1919 to 2001), a key figure in the development of early prosthetics. Domanovic reimagines this robotic hand in ways that challenge traditional gender roles and envision a future of post-human and post-gender bodies. These reinterpretations are not only about technological advancements, but also about the social implications of such developments, questioning who gets to design and who benefits from these technologies.

In terms of media, Domanovic is deeply interested in the evolution of mass communication and its impact on collective memory and identity, especially how media - including the Internet - shape public perception and national identity.

Her work with both robotics and media thus functions on multiple levels, examining how these technologies influence societal structures and individual identities, while also considering their aesthetic and symbolic dimensions. According to the introduction in the press release, Aleksandra Domanovic's exhibited artworks will provide a reflective space where viewers can contemplate the past, present, and potential futures of our technological and media landscapes.

Details about the opening hours and the announcement of the monographic book are published on https://www.mqw.at/en/program/exhibition-aleksandra-domanovic (fast checked by Fashion.at today).
