MAK Museum of Applied Arts Vienna presents the architecture and history of protest barricades and camps, including activism with superglue with installations that look like protest toolkits.

'Going to the barricades' is taken literally in the new MAK exhibition! Visitors will gain insight into various forms of protest with a focus on architecture, from historical events such as the July Revolution in Paris in 1830 to contemporary protests, including activism with superglue.

'PROTEST/ARCHITECTURE: Barricades, Camps, Superglue,' on view at the MAK Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria, from February 14 to August 25, 2024, was developed in collaboration with the DAM Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt, Germany. The exhibition explores the spatial aspects of protest cultures, focusing on political movements expressed through architectural or design objects in public spaces. It features models, photographs and a film installation highlighting 13 protests from around the world between 1968 and 2023. Notable examples include the Tahrir Square protests in Cairo, the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York, and the 'LobauBleibt!' protests in Vienna. The exhibition illustrates how protest architecture has played an important role in achieving the goals of various movements. It highlights the ingenuity and resourcefulness of protesters in creating temporary structures in different socio-political contexts. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication that serves as an encyclopedia of protests from 1830 to 2023.

The opening of the exhibition will take place today at 19:00; details at https://www.mak.at/protestarchitektur.
