Preview of the exhibition of comic art by Simon Schwartz about the history of the salt mine in Altaussee, which was partly told in the Hollywood movie 'The Monuments Men'

Yesterday the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 sent a preview of the comic art by Simon Schwartz, which will be exhibited under the title 'Hidden in the Rock. The Mountain, the Salt & the Art' from March 23 to November 3, 2024. Fashion.at checked the train connections on the opening day, March 22. Altaussee can be reached from Vienna in less than five hours. Accommodations are easy to find, starting at around 60 Euros (quickly checked today on booking.com).

The salt mine and its history during the Second World War became internationally known through the Hollywood movie 'The Monuments Men' with George Clooney and Matt Damon. The history of salt mining in Altaussee goes back to the Middle Ages, to the 12th century. 'Verborgen im Fels' (Hidden in the Rock) is the title of a new exhibition and accompanying comic book by Simon Schwartz, who was commissioned to tell the story of the Altaussee salt mine, where art stolen by Hitler during World War II was hidden. The exhibition at Steinberghaus Salzwelten Altaussee is a collaboration between Salzwelten GmbH and the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024. It highlights the history of salt mining in the region and its role during the war, in particular how the miners prevented the destruction of the art treasures in 1945. Schwartz's comic book will be published in conjunction with the exhibition. It's announced that it is detailing the same narrative.

Registration is required to attend the March 22 opening; details are published at https://www.salzkammergut-2024.at/en/projekte/hidden-in-the-rock/.

By the way: Simon Schwartz's 'Vita Obscura' comic strip regularly fills a page of the FAZ magazine, where Karl Lagerfeld's 'Karlikaturen' of current events and personalities were once published until his death in 2019.
