This week, the City of Vienna's Department of Culture and Science launched a new costume rental service aimed at promoting sustainability within the independent cultural sector. The initiative, a collaboration between Theaterverein Wien - which manages five theaters supported by the City of Vienna, among others - and ART for ART - the company known for its costume and set design workshops and rental services for prominent houses such as the Vienna State Opera - is in line with the City's Cultural Strategy 2030, which emphasizes environmental responsibility in the arts. ART for ART's new 'Kostümfundus' (costume rental service) option introduces a professional rental platform that allows independent groups and venues to access costumes more affordably. By contributing their own costumes to this communal fund, participants can borrow from a shared collection, reducing both costs and storage issues. Contributors receive vouchers for the current value of their costumes that can be used for future costume rentals, or they can benefit from a reduced rental rate. Veronica Kaup-Hasler, City Councillor for Culture and Science, praised the costume fund as a step towards resource-efficient cultural production. Petra Höfinger, Managing Director of ART for ART, emphasized the project's role in promoting the sharing economy and reducing waste. The fund, located at ART for ART's Montleartstrasse facility (https://artforart.at/en/services/rental/costume-rental), provides professional storage and support for costumes, fostering greater exchange and sustainability within Vienna's independent scene. According to the press release, more than 400 independent groups, small and medium-sized theaters and independent artists who have been supported by the Cultural Department in recent years are now given the opportunity to re-network through sustainable costume management.
