Vienna Design Week builds on designs for dreams and energy- and resource-saving solutions for the future; some calls for participation are still open

Fashion.at attended the press conference of the Vienna Design Week for the first preview of this year's program from September 20 to 29 and the headquarters, which traditionally moves it's location to the focus district. This year it's the third district of Vienna and for the first time the headquarters will not be located in a building that is about to be rebuilt or demolished. In 2024, the headquarters will be located in a building that is scheduled to be completed in September. The VDW (Vienna Design Week) will be the first to experience the qualities of the new building, which will be a social hub for a new part of the city, the 'Village im Dritten' with around 2000 apartments for over 4000 people and with additional office buildings and an infrastructure for everyday needs including shops placed at the so-called 'docks', similar to the docks at a port, a kind of landing stages placed like belts around the village with its numerous buildings. The docks will offer 9,000 square meters of space for loft offices and shops with exhibition areas, as well as restaurants. And it is here in the docks that the VDW will have its headquarters and several main events.

Fashion.at spoke with representatives from ARE Austrian Real Estate, the masterminds of the village project. The focus of the conversation was the village's climate-friendly energy systems. The VDW program interplays with the development of this part of the district. One of the examples of how this interplay will be realized is the initiative of the program partner Vienna Business Agency in the format 'Urban Food & Design', one of a total of eight formats presented on April 25 by the director of the VDW, Gabriel Roland. In this format, the design of the lounge and hospitality area of the festival headquarters by the dreiST collective, consisting of Martin Kohlbauer, Luisa Zwetkow and Sophie Coqui, incorporates the results of 'Biofabrique Vienna', which is currently presented at the Climate Biennale Vienna. The Biofabrique is an experimental project that uses the synergies of material research, design and architecture. The material comes from waste sources such as the city's unused resources from the current subway construction sites of Vienna's future fully automated U5 subway line (scheduled for 2026) or the production waste from the Austrian bakery Ströck. Details about the Biofabrique can be found at https://www.biennale.wien/projekte/biofabrique.

The dreiST collective was selected through an open call. There are currently several open calls inviting designers to participate, such as Ikea's 'Dare to Dream', which focuses on developing ideas for sleep, from more artistic approaches such as installations to design solutions such as specific products. The open calls are published on https://www.viennadesignweek.at/en/info/open-calls/.
