Vienna Insight: The art of collecting waste! Street Art Open Gallery of murals on one of the city's waste management buildings

The collection of waste, the recycling of materials and the use of non-recyclable materials for the production of energy is practiced in Vienna through a refined system for the reduction of waste in teamwork between the Municipal Department of Waste Management (MA48) and the citizens, who separate their waste such as paper or glass - both of which can be recycled - from other materials that have to be burned in the waste incineration plant, where new energy is produced for Viennese households. Seasonal specials, such as the current Christmas tree disposal - only trees without decorations! - at 583 Christmas tree collection points are communicated through various channels, including the city's official website https://www.wien.gv.at/umwelt/ma48/sauberestadt/christbaumsammlung/. Christmas trees - by the way - are thermally recycled along with residual waste.

The latest news from the waste management department concerns one of the collection points, the 48er-Mistplatz at Kendlerstraße 38a in Vienna-Ottakring. The building has been transformed into a 'Street Art Open Gallery'. Eight local and international artists have graffitied the exterior walls, turning the space into an open-air gallery. The project, supported by City Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky and Deputy District Manager Steffi Lamp, aims to bring more vibrancy to Ottakring. The curated outdoor gallery, a collaboration between the district, city authorities and artists, features works by Golif, Video Oner, Sckre, Junek, David Leitner, Nadine Werjant, El Jerrino, Rapunze and Deadbeat Hero. The artworks were created in the last few months - curated by the artists Elisabeth and Rob Perez of 'Soon Art Studio': Ottakring now has, next to the Street Art Passage in the Museumsquartier, the largest curated outdoor gallery in Vienna.

The artwork was created by Viennese graphic designer, illustrator and muralist Nadine Werjant. In an Instagram post, the artist points out that the mural features her dog Momo and pays homage to their adventures.

Editor's note: Dog excrements are considered residual waste and do not belong in the organic waste bin or compost. Dog waste bags are burned at the incinerator to protect the environment. The 'Mist-ABC' at https://www.wien.gv.at/umwelt/ma48/beratung/muelltrennung/mistabc.html is a practical guide to waste disposal.
