What is the biggest tourist attraction in eastern Austria? It is neither nature nor a cultural landmark. Can you guess?

Eastern Austria has many beautiful and interesting places. For example, Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland with its extraordinary nature, the old Roman town of Carnuntum in Lower Austria with its reconstructed houses, workshops, villas and thermal baths, where you can step back in time to the days of Marcus Aurelius, gladiators and tribunes, and several castles, such as Schloss Hof, where in addition to the impressive Baroque garden, people can currently visit the special exhibition 'Imperial Weddings'. But the real tourist hotspot in eastern Austria isn't nature or a cultural spectacle - it's a shopping village built in the mid-90s, opened in 1998. With 6.8 million visitors from all over the world in 2023, it's clearly one of the country's must-see destinations.

At a press conference this week, McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Parndorf presented the latest statistics and insights into the strategies that have made it the largest designer outlet in Central Europe with almost 37,000 m² of sales space, where around 160 shops offer products at discounts of up to 70 percent. With around 2,000 jobs, the designer outlet is the most important private employer in Burgenland. At 6.8 million visitors in 2023, the Outlet broke its pre-pandemic records; sales increased by ten percent compared to 2019. According to visitor statistics, the outlet's popularity has expanded globally, with a significant increase in tourists from regions such as South Korea, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

At the press conference, several infrastructure strategies were presented, such as the public e-bus which can be accessed from the Parndorf train station, the expansion of photovoltaics on the center grounds to generate electricity for the stores, and due to the increasing demand for e-charging stations, the expansion of the infrastructure over the next few months to become one of the largest e-charging hubs in Austria. The designer outlet has also introduced a new payment option: since the beginning of the year, the Designer Outlet Parndorf has also been cooperating with Alipay in order to specifically address Chinese guests during their stay in Vienna.
