18 July 2026 New Vienna Art Fair to Fill September Market Gap![]()
Quick Read
After several unexpected changes to Vienna's art fair landscape, the city's contemporary art market has found a new focal point for September. Following the cancellation of viennacontemporary and the absence of Art Vienna in 2026, a newly announced event aims to restore an international gallery platform during Vienna's traditional art week.
• Vienna's September art fair calendar has changed significantly for 2026 following the cancellation of viennacontemporary and the absence of Art Vienna. A new chapter for Vienna's art marketThe Astoria Artshow will hold its inaugural edition from 10 to 13 September 2026 at the historic Astoria Garage in Vienna's 8th district. Organised by VAU – Vienna Art United, a newly established association bringing together 35 Vienna galleries, the event is conceived as both a preview edition and the starting point for a new annual international art fair beginning in 2027.According to the organisers, approximately 70 Austrian and international galleries are expected to participate. At this stage, however, the exhibitor list has not yet been published. Until official announcements are released, it remains too early to identify participating galleries or artists. Replacing a missing international platformThe new fair arrives after an unusually turbulent year for Vienna's contemporary art market. The cancellation of viennacontemporary, together with the absence of Art Vienna, left the city without its traditional large-scale international gallery fair during September.Rather than allowing this gap to remain, Vienna's gallery community has launched its own initiative. The Astoria Artshow therefore represents more than an additional exhibition—it is a structural response to changing market conditions and an attempt to maintain Vienna's visibility within the international art fair calendar. September synergy with Parallel ViennaAnother notable aspect is the timing. The Astoria Artshow will take place almost simultaneously with Parallel Vienna, which runs from 9 to 13 September 2026 at the Otto Wagner Areal. This scheduling continues a long-established pattern in Vienna's cultural calendar. For many years, Parallel Vienna deliberately took place alongside the city's main contemporary art fair, allowing collectors, curators and visitors to experience different exhibition formats during a single visit. Although the former anchor fair has disappeared, the tradition of a concentrated September art week remains intact through the arrival of the Astoria Artshow. The two events remain independent organisations, but together they are likely to reinforce Vienna's position as an attractive destination for contemporary art during one concentrated week. Historic architecture becomes a new exhibition venueThe venue itself sets the Astoria Artshow apart. The Astoria Garage originated in the early 1920s and was extensively expanded between 1935 and 1938 into the six-storey tower garage that survives today, complete with its distinctive spiral ramp and glass dome. Among Vienna's oldest surviving multi-storey garages, the building combines Modernist industrial architecture with naturally lit exhibition spaces, offering an unconventional setting for contemporary art. The 2026 Astoria Artshow will be the first major art fair to occupy this historic landmark. While many details—including participating galleries and artists—will be announced closer to the opening, the launch of the Astoria Artshow already signals that Vienna's gallery sector intends to rebuild an international contemporary art platform through its own initiative. Whether the preview edition develops into a permanent fixture will become clearer after its first September edition, but its position within Vienna's autumn cultural calendar already appears significant.
