26 June 2026 Motorsport Meets Design and Fashion at MAK Vienna![]()
Quick Read
As engines prepare to roar at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg, Vienna offers a different perspective on racing culture. At the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), motorsport is presented through the lens of industrial design, visual culture and fashion as FAT International collaborates with Porsche for a special weekend exhibition celebrating 75 years of Porsche in competition.
• Austria hosts a motorsport-filled weekend, with Formula 1 at the Red Bull Ring and a design-focused exhibition in Vienna.
From logistics sponsor to contemporary lifestyle platformFAT International traces its origins to the logistics company Français Allemand Transit, whose distinctive branding became familiar to motorsport fans through sponsorship of endurance racing in the late twentieth century. In recent years, the name has been revived by entrepreneur Ferdi Porsche as a Vienna-based platform combining automotive culture, design, events and apparel. The MAK presentation reflects that broader approach. Alongside historical racing machines, visitors will encounter archival material, photography and objects illustrating the cultural history surrounding endurance racing. The organisers have also announced the debut and on-site availability of a new FAT capsule collection, highlighting how fashion has become part of contemporary automotive storytelling. Historic race cars meet museum design cultureAccording to the programme, two notable Le Mans veterans—the Porsche 911 GT1 and the Dauer Porsche 962 LM GT—will be displayed together with exclusive archive pieces. Rather than treating the vehicles solely as sporting machines, the exhibition positions them as examples of industrial design and cultural history.Additional attractions include an Auto Toy Store, the capsule apparel collection and an outdoor garden programme with music and refreshments scheduled for Saturday, weather permitting. The exhibition is accessible free of charge on 27 June from 10:00 to 18:00, while it remains part of the regular museum admission on 28 June. Textiles, jewellery and fashion-related exhibitions complement the visitThe motorsport installation coincides with several exhibitions that may also interest readers of Fashion.at.Among them is GLANZSTÜCKE, which juxtaposes high jewellery by Van Cleef & Arpels with selected masterpieces from the MAK collection, creating a dialogue between contemporary jewellery craftsmanship and historical decorative arts. Although museum admission is free on Saturday, visitors still need to reserve a complimentary time-slot ticket for this exhibition. Another current presentation, URSI FÜRTLER. Textil – Abstrakt, examines the artist's textile-based practice through abstract compositions that bridge weaving, material experimentation and visual art. The recently redesigned permanent display TEXTILES AND CARPETS offers a broader historical perspective, including Viennese shawls, woven fabrics and carpets that illustrate centuries of textile production and design development. Fashion.at has previously reported on all three exhibitions, making the FAT event an opportunity to combine motorsport history with fashion and applied arts in a single museum visit. A city-wide programme extends beyond the museumThe MAK exhibition forms part of FAT CITY, a weekend programme running from 26 to 28 June across Vienna. The activities begin on Friday evening with Cars & Würstel at AUSGABE in the ninth district. This informal public gathering features motorsport stories, food, and music.Saturday night concludes with Night Shift at PRST Club on Praterstraße, featuring DJs including Wolfram, Heinz Tronigger and Alexander Robotnick. For visitors interested in the intersection of automotive heritage, industrial design and contemporary apparel, the MAK event demonstrates how motorsport culture increasingly extends beyond the race circuit into museums, fashion and visual storytelling.
