From temporary home to city route

If Vienna's cultural programme does not quite match the mood of the day, a more relaxed way of seeing the city is to put on running shoes. Wilde Vienna Fleischmarkt has introduced "Run with the GM", a running format led by General Manager Sebastian Naumann.

The idea fits the character of the aparthotel. Wilde combines hotel services with studios and apartments equipped with kitchens and living areas, responding to travellers who want more flexibility than a conventional hotel room. The Vienna property occupies a former post office building more than 300 years old. Its interiors reinterpret elements of the Vienna Secession, Wiener Werkstätte and coffeehouse culture rather than reproducing them historically.

Art before the running shoes

The building itself is part of the cultural setting. In its historic courtyard, the Museum of Change presents an open-air digital art installation by Viennese artist SHA. The work uses light, sound and digital media and changes over time, turning the courtyard into an unusual urban art space. The installation is free and runs from sunset, with highlight shows during the evening.

This combination of architecture, contemporary art and everyday hospitality is relevant to the running concept: the hotel is not presented simply as a place to sleep, but as a starting point for experiencing the surrounding city.

A sightseeing route at running pace

The route begins at Fleischmarkt and follows a compact selection of central Vienna sights. The published route leads towards the Danube Canal and Urania, continues through Stadtpark and then follows the Ringstrasse. Depending on the pace and distance, runners pass the Vienna State Opera, Hofburg and City Hall before returning through the quieter streets of the Stubenviertel.

The sequence also corresponds broadly with the sightseeing route shown by Wilde on Instagram: Fleischmarkt → Danube Canal → Urania → Stadtpark → Ringstrasse, with the historic centre providing further landmarks along the way.

It is therefore less a conventional running event than a moving city tour. Beginners can join, while more experienced runners can ask for a longer or faster version. Photo stops are possible, too. The stated emphasis is not on personal bests but on seeing Vienna from a different angle.

No fixed race date

There is an important practical difference from a conventional running event: "Run with the GM" has no fixed weekly date, registration deadline or participation fee. Guests are asked to enquire at reception; the hotel currently describes the run as practically available every day, depending on arrangements.

For anyone interested, it therefore makes sense to call Wilde Vienna Fleischmarkt in advance and ask when the next run with Sebastian Naumann is planned. That keeps the idea what it is intended to be: not another competitive event to fit into a packed Vienna itinerary, but a relatively easy way to combine some exercise with a sightseeing route.
