Vienna is preparing for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026, one of the world's largest live television events. The competition shows at Wiener Stadthalle are expected to be broadcast by dozens of television stations across Europe and beyond through the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The Eurovision Song Contest itself dates back to 1956 and has developed from a post-war television experiment into a major international entertainment event watched by millions every year.

Beyond the televised semi-finals and the Grand Final, Vienna is also presenting a wide cultural program across the city. One of the highlights for fashion-interested visitors is "Fashion for Europe", a runway event taking place on 15 May 2026 at 8 pm at Rathausplatz as part of the Eurovision Village program.

Fashion for Europe brings European labels to Rathausplatz

The open-air show combines fashion and music under the Eurovision atmosphere. Designers from different countries present labels connected to regional style traditions, couture or contemporary fashion culture.

Participating brands include:
• Austria – Lena Hoschek, known for feminine silhouettes inspired by vintage Austrian fashion
• Azerbaijan – Fakhriya Khalafova, associated with elegant couture and eveningwear
• Europe – Anse Victorin, presenting cross-European contemporary design
• Finland – Teemu Muurimäki, recognized for dramatic stage and gala looks
• Germany – Marjo Trachten, combining traditional Tracht elements with modern styling
• Italy – Luis Trenker, inspired by alpine lifestyle and Italian tailoring
• Lithuania – Laura Daili, known for sculptural and sustainable fashion concepts
• Malta – Charles & Ron, presenting Mediterranean luxury resort and eveningwear
• Montenegro – Sanja Matijevic, focusing on contemporary womenswear
• Slovakia – Musa, combining minimalist and urban influences
• Spain – Valour Studio, streetwear with .
• Ukraine – Katerina Kvit, known for embroidery references and modern craftsmanship

Security, no-bag rules and preparations across the city

Security has become a major topic around large international live events. In recent months, Vienna, the ORF and partner organizations have repeatedly emphasized visitor safety as well as the safety of people working for and around the Eurovision production.

Recently, Austria's social accident insurance institution AUVA awarded the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna a special quality seal for occupational safety management. AUVA is responsible for workplace accident insurance and prevention in Austria. According to the organizers, the ESC is the first event in the country to receive this recognition for its safety concept.

The city has invested more than €22 million into hosting the event, a higher amount than during Eurovision 2015, when Vienna last hosted after the victory of Conchita Wurst. Discussions about costs have appeared in Austrian media and public opinion surveys, but several studies suggest that a majority of Viennese residents still view the event positively because of expected tourism effects, international visibility and economic impact.

A visible part of the security concept is the "no-bag" policy for the live shows at Wiener Stadthalle. Visitors are generally not allowed to bring larger bags or backpacks into the arena. Only very small personal items and limited essentials are permitted after security checks. Detailed rules are available via Vienna ESC security information.

General ESC information, schedules and city-wide activities are summarized at Vienna Eurovision overview.

Eurofan Cafés create meeting places across Vienna

Another distinctive part of Eurovision week is the network of 21 Eurofan Cafés. Traditional Viennese cafés and venues each represent one or two participating countries and organize themed gatherings, discussions and viewing events.

Among the participating cafés are Café Landtmann, Café Sperl, Café Mozart, Café Schwarzenberg and MQ Kantine. The concept combines Vienna coffeehouse culture with international fan culture. Visitors can meet fans connected to specific countries, attend talks or join public viewing evenings. An overview is available at Eurofan Cafés Vienna.

One notable program (Instagram) point takes place at MQ Kantine, which represents Israel. Tomorrow, Saturday, Austrian actress Katharina Stemberger is expected for a reading event. Stemberger is currently widely known for her role as chief inspector Johanna "Joe" Heizinger in the television crime series SOKO Linz.

"Queers in the Garden" introduces official safer-space concept

A new aspect of Eurovision 2026 is "Queers in the Garden", described by organizers as the first official Eurovision side-event zone explicitly designed as a queer safer space. From 13 to 16 May 2026, the Volksgarten Pavillon near Heldenplatz will host public viewings, club nights and community gatherings curated by Vangardist agency together with the party series "Männer im Garten". The project positions itself as an inclusive meeting point for LGBTQIA+ visitors and allies from across Europe.

Together with the Eurovision Village at Rathausplatz, the Eurofan Cafés and numerous side events, Vienna currently presents itself as a city shaped by international encounters. In cafés, public squares and fan zones, the Eurovision slogan "United by Music" already appears visible in everyday city life.

The no-bag regulations may still create confusion for some visitors. Ironically, one of the most talked-about Eurovision accessories in Vienna this year is itself a bag: the limited "Vienna Experience Bag" by WienTourismus. Around 10,000 black ESC-themed gym bags are being distributed through a ticket-holder prize draw, while additional bags were handed to volunteers. Each contains discount offers, Eurovision merchandise, a lanyard, bracelet and reusable drinking cup. Information about the prize draw is available at Vienna Experience Bag prize draw.
