Fashion.at gastro tip Vienna 2018: Café, brasserie, bar 'Palmenhaus' at the Hofburg Palace garden 'Burggarten'

Recently, Fashion.at published an article about a new beach club at the Danube Canal called 'Blumenwiese' which means translated from German to English 'Flower Meadow'. Today, Fashion.at came along another recommendable gastro location which references also in its name nature's flora. The café, brasserie, bar 'Palmenhaus' ('Palm house') is located at the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) greenhouse carrying the same name Palmenhaus at the garden 'Burggarten' in Vienna. Burggarten belongs to the Hofburg Palace. It was created in the early 19th century by Emperor Franz I who learned - like it was common in the Habsburg family, additionally a craft; he was an educated gardener and is also known as the 'Flower Emperor'. The 'Emperor's Garden' was until 1918 part of the residence. 1919 it was opened to the public and later renamed into 'Burggarten'. The former private garden of the Habsburg family is located nearby the Austrian National Library (Nationalbibliothek, history dates back to the Middle Ages; on view at the image) where the extensive collection of nature science and botanical books by researcher Emperor Franz I is archived.

The re-creation of the garden (into an English landscape garden) as well as the new greenhouse (Jugendstil architecture) happened under Emperor Franz Joseph I. The terrace with view at one of the green oases of the city - some might say the most beautiful of the Inner City of Vienna, is one of the top locations during Spring/Summer season. The ones who are interested in architecture will find inside an example for contemporary approaches to gastro-interior in a historical building. The interior concept was developed by Vienna-based architects Eichinger/Knechtl in the late 1990s and fits seamlessly into the greenhouse.
