Prelude to the ball season: Vienna State Opera calls for designers for the Vienna Opera Ball 2024
The record-breaking heat of September and now October almost makes us forget that the traditional events of the winter season are already in preparation. Such as the balls that are part of Austria's cultural heritage. The Vienna Opera Ball is the most glamorous ball in the country because of its artistic program of ballet and music with performances by prominent opera singers, the illustrious guests from business, politics, and society, and last but not least the fashion worn by the guests and the ballet dancers of the Vienna State Opera. The latter traditionally appear in the opening ballet in costumes designed by internationally renowned creators, such as last season's Susanne Bisovsky, and in the ball's Couture Salon in designer pieces selected by a jury, in 2023 in fashion by Jennifer Milleder, Moulham Obid and Florentina Leitner (article).
For its next Couture Salon, the Vienna State Opera is calling on talented fashion designers to create a 'grand gown' for the Vienna Opera Ball 2024. Designers can apply until 31 October 2023 for the chance to present their creations at the Vienna Opera Ball on 8 February 2024 and at the Couture Salon, an official side event of the ball. The Couture Salon has been held since 2014. In 2024, it will take place on 17 January 2024 at the Hotel Bristol.
Interested designers - both emerging and established - can apply on the Vienna State Opera website at https://www.wiener-staatsoper.at/opernball/couturesalon2024/. Finalists will be announced in November. Three selected designers will have the opportunity to present their designs at both the Vienna Opera Ball and the Couture Salon in collaboration with the dancers of the Vienna State Ballet. They will receive extensive media exposure and an honorary ticket to the Vienna Opera Ball, including a red carpet appearance with the dancers. Their work will also be prominently featured in the Vienna Opera Ball program.
To participate, designers must have a connection to Austria, either through birth, residence, or work. They are required to provide 4 to 5 gown looks and be available for fittings and voting from November 2023 to February 2024. Designers can choose to display existing designs or create new ones for the event, and the gowns will remain their property, offered as a free loan for the Couture Salon and Vienna Opera Ball.
