Insight into the work of Renate Bertlmann, the first female artist with solo show at the Austrian pavilion at the Biennale Arte in Venice (11 May - 24 Nov 2019)

Today, the first image from inside the Austrian pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition Biennale di Venezia (title 'May You Live In Interesting Times', pre-opening on 8, 9, 10 May) was released via Instagram @austrianpavilion (embed below). The image shows artist Renate Bertlmann, the first female artist who will present a solo show at the Austrian pavilion (inaugurated in 1934).

Award winning feminist artist (Prize of the City of Vienna in 2007, Grand Austrian State Prize in 2017,...) Renate Bertlmann has chosen for the show the title 'Discordo Ergo Sum' (I dissent, therefore I am) for referencing power structures in society. The artist, born 1943 in Vienna, is known for her explorations of topics like gender, bodies and roles in relation to hierarchy mixed with sexuality, violence and pornography.

At the entrance of the Austrian pavilion, Renate Bertlmann applied provocatively the writing 'Amo Ergo Sum' (I love, therefore I am).
