Selected from the Vienna Design Week program (27 Sept - 6 Oct): Art & design explored with works by Esther Stocker & Kohlmaier, Iris van Herpen & Swarovski

Each year in September, early October, Vienna celebrates art and design with special events. Today at 5 PM starts the art fair/exhibition 'Parallel Vienna'; at 10 PM, the art event is continued with the Opening Party x Wolfram Album Release x FM4 (Facebook event). In two days on 26 September, the art fair 'vienna contemporary' begins. Both fairs are about art - the first mentioned is more driven by artists themselves, the other more by the art business. Vienna contemporary publishes a useful program of art-related events under the category 'In Vienna' such as 'Vienna Design Week' which starts on 27 September.

Vienna Design Week happens on various locations through the city. The best way to explore the program is via the design week's website viennadesignweek.at. The 'Program' is organized chronologically starting on 27 September with presentations like the exhibition of the 'Knitterplanet' (translated 'Wrinkled Planet') at the headquarters of furniture producer Kohlmaier at Neubaugasse 32. The company was founded 1884 and is known for collaborations with architects, designers and artists. 'Knitterplanet' is the name of the sculpture-furniture developed by artist Esther Stocker together with Kohlmaier. It has a heavenly appeal that is earthed at the same time. "The wrinkled planet folds and deforms ordered space and breaks with rigid geometry," is the 'Habitable Wrinkled Planets' seats' design described at the program.

Another exhibition at the program concerns the collaboration between haute couture designer Iris van Herpen and Swarovski exhibited at the Swarovski Kristallwelten Store at Kärntner Straße 24. The usage of crystal in design and art will be presented with objects from the Atelier Swarovski Home Collection and nature inspired installations by haute couture designer Iris van Herpen.
