#Fashion as expression of #culture?

...is one of the questions of 'EU Textiles' by artist Małgorzata Markiewicz (born 1979, living in Krakow, Poland). 'EU Textiles' is from 8 November 2011 to 29 January 2012 on show at the MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow.

It's not the first time that Małgorzata Markiewicz presents ideas about Europe with the means of 'fashion'. In 'The Map' (2009), she sew on the paper map of Europe which is defined by fallen and not fallen borders and traces such as of migration. This way the artist visualized the structure of Europe and made the object 'alive'.

In her new work 'EU Textiles', Małgorzata Markiewicz throws an eye on the fading EU-borders and the diversity of cultures and how they are influencing each other. Her impressions are realised in an EU-costume which is in the form for all EU-members the same (the top in the shade of E, the pants have the pattern of an U). Only the textiles differ from nation to nation. But there are still some questions open.

"Would this costume be diversified by gender? Will gender have any significance at all? Can a cultural transformation be reflected in clothing?..." asks Małgorzata Markiewicz on malgorzatamarkiewicz.com/en,now,223.
