Bei großen, höfischen und staatlichen Festen und an den kirchlichen Feiertagen hatten auch die Damen vorgeschriebene Kleider zu tragen.

From the first half of the 19th century onwards, Vienna’s street scenes were dominated by people in uniform or livery. From the minister to the doorman, the university professor to the school caretaker, the Lord Chief Justice to the messenger boy, everybody wore a uniform. In addition, numerous carriages with horses in handsome harnesses accompanied by coachmen and footmen in even more impressive liveries filled the streets. A liveried porter with his long porter’s stick stood in front of every official building and every palace.
