Fashion Mutations 1960-2000
A French and International Perspective
Since the 1960's, new materials used in the making of clothing have turned the fashion world upside-down. Fashion Mutations intends to give us a new take on these changes. Nylon, the first synthetic fiber, is put on the market in 1938. During the next 20 years, from 1938 to 1958, petrochemical laboratories move onto other discoveries-from polyester and acrylic to elasthan (lycra) in 1959. The multiplication and mix of natural and chemically-derived materials obliges the garment industry to start sewing on tags listing the article's composition from 1963. The subject of this exposition begins exactly at this date. It will follow three themes:

  • o The euphoria of materials
  • o Innovative forces in textile techniques (the most recent, and also the most widespread, being computer-aided design and production)
  • o Fashion designers, alchemists of materials
The exposition proposes an important collection of textile and clothing creations, often exposed for the first time, from private collections or institutions in the United States (The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Texas Fashion Collection), from Japan, and in Europe: from Finland (Museum of Art and Design in Helsinki), from the Netherlands, from Belgium, from Germany (the Frankfurt Ballet), from Switzerland, from Italy, Great Britain (Museum of London), and from France (National Funds of Contemporary Art, The Forney Library, The Museum of Fashion and Textile). It also gives us the opportunity to show the public a large part of the impressive 201h Century collection of the Musée Galliera, the Fashion Museum of Paris, a constantly growing collection thanks to the generous gifts of designers, corporations, and private individuals.

Exposition Layout
Fashion Mutations brings together models of haute couture and pret-à-porter, accessories, works of textile art and design, posters, and photographs. Some "totems" will serve as supports for textile samples which the public may touch. Some films and two CDROMs on textiles and textile sizing (@Premiere Vision) will also be available.
