'Water for Elephants'
directed by Francis Lawrence
starring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, Christoph Waltz...
Release: April 2011
Story: 'Water for Elephants' is about a veterinary student who falls in live with the circus and the star of the ring. The story plays in the time of the Depression in the 1930s in America.

A movie's dramaturgical and visually depth through costumes

Two-time Oscar nominated costume designer Jacqueline West (known from 'The Social Network', 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'...) created with her costumes an additional depth onto the picture by using vibrant colors for the main roles August (Robert Pattinson) and Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), while the other characters wear muted colors - but not only visually, as she intensifies this way the dramaturgy of the dichotomy between the circus glitter and the world outside, the Depression-era in America.

The fashion style of Hollywood stars from the 1930s had been inspiring sources for Marlena's outfits. "As Marlena, Reese’s outfits included a beaded evening dress and parade costume with marabou feathers made from vintage antique pieces put together in a patchwork. Her evening gowns reflect those she saw at the movies, worn by some of the period’s top stars, including Jean Harlow, Carol Lombard and Constance Bennett."
