New Frankfurt Internationals: Stories and Stages

11 December 2010 – 13 February 2011
Frankfurter Kunstverein and MMK Zollamt

Artists perform stories on various stages

On 10 December 2010, the Frankfurter Kunstverein and MMK Zollamt have opened the exhibition project 'New Frankfurt Internationals: Stories and Stages' in collaboration with the State Academy of Fine Arts Staedelschule with works of 40 artists from different countries, who have studied in the region Frankfurt Rhein-Main, about strategies and techniques of 'narration' in art.

At 'Stories and Stages', the artists are presenting works that question how stories are told and how media and technologies can influence the interpretation of a story.

Shannon Bool (born 1972 in Canada, lives in Berlin) has adapted the photograph by the Austrian architect Adolf Loos from 1903 showing the bedroom of Lina, who was his wife from 1902 to 1905. The bedroom is erotically designed with white fabrics on the wall and fur on the floor. Shannon Bool has applied a naked female metal body onto the image; only the head looks 'natural' - like the blonde one of Lina Loos herself, who has worked as an actress and writer. Probably, Shannon Bool refers with the poured-alike metallic body to the emancipatory side of Lina Loos, who has written later that Adolf Loos' aim was to form her after his imagination. Her affair with another man during her marriage with Adolf Loos has inspired the Austrian author Arthur Schnitzler to the tragicomedy 'Das Wort' (transl. 'The Word') for the theatre stage.

"Through the use of fragmentation or montage they break down established narrative patterns, disrupt their threads of meaning, and create new forms of visual narrative." www.newfrankfurtinternationals.de

Alongside to the Frankfurter Kunstverein and MMK Zollamt, the 'Rhein-Main-Zeitung', the regional edition of the 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung', serves as one of the 'stages'. Each week, one page of the newspaper will be designed by an artist as a reflection of the medium’s specific narrative structure and the relationship between text and image.
