Vienna Insight: Blickfang Design Prize winning 'Snorre' furniture made from waste seen at the design market 'Weihnachtsquartier' at the MQ MuseumsQuartier

Yesterday, Fashion.at visited the 3-days design market 'Weihnachtsquartier' (until 27 November) at the MQ MuseumsQuartier in Vienna. Among the fashion, bags, leather accessories, jewelry, ceramics, cosmetics, books, culinary or furniture presented in booths located in three halls on around 1.000 square meters, the one or other treasure with collectible value can be found. The small-series and in many cases unique pieces are produced by individual artists, crafts people, designers or teams, such in the case of the furniture brand 'Snorre' by architect Maximilian Klammer and digital marketing specialist Thomas Maurer, who founded the company as social community project in collaboration with Vienna's Department for Waste Management, the MA 48 of the City of Vienna and the 'Wörkerei' by the charitable associations Volkshilfe and Caritas.

The socio-economic operation 'Wörkerei' with jobs for around 50 young people, who make their first steps into the world of work, was launched last year. The 'Wörkerei' with two workshops and stores is focused among other activities on the production of goods from waste such as the adjustable columnar 'Snorre' furniture which received last year the Blickfang Wien 2021 Design Prize in the category 'Möbel & Produktdesign' (Furniture & Product Design). The design label's name 'Snorre' was developed from the English word 'snore' which refers with a wink to the upcycled slatted frames of beds; snore was 'northized' for referencing the 'Snorre'-style inspired by functional and reduced Scandinavian design. The 'Snorre' furniture can be used as a plant stand or as a table; the width of the diameter for the plant pot or the table top can be flexibly adjusted.
